Green On Green: 1979 Ford Bronco XLT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When we see a desirable vehicle in a slightly unusual color, it’s hard not to covet said vehicle even more than normal. Sure, a square-body truck like a Ford Bronco is sought-after, but there’s oftentimes no sense of urgency to buy one given the volume of trucks for sale at any given time. This 1979 Bronco XLT 4×4, however, may be more of a one-off given the unusual color scheme of metallic green over green, and it’s listed here on eBay with bids to $20,800 and no reserve.

The color scheme is definitely distinctive, and given how many Broncos we see wearing white or black paint finishes, seeing one in green definitely stands out. The seller has leaned into this, even sourcing green floor mats! The carpet is even a dark forest green and that’s perhaps the most distinctive part of the interior, given it’s not uncommon to see the seats and dash match the exterior. Green carpets, however? That’s unusual.

The seller notes that the Bronco is powered by 400ci V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission with a dual range transfer case. In 2022, the transmission was rebuilt along with the front brake assemblies being replaced, a new driveshaft installed, and the grill and fuel tank being replaced. Among those updates he notes that the carpet was also replaced, which explains why it’s still so vibrant in photos.

The white rally wheels are the perfect look for a square-body truck of almost any configuration, whether it’s a Bronco, Blazer, or Scout. This truck looks fantastic in green, and I’d be willing to bet that much of the bidding activity comes from the unusual color scheme. The market for pristine vintage 4x4s and untouched survivors will likely always be one of the hottest ones out there, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one finish up near $30,000.

Friend of mine had one. Mileage wasn’t great but it looked great and could go anywhere. Michigan snowstorms were a piece of cake. He always made it in to work.

I’ve owned several! The 400cid is a great motor. Ford never produced a 4bbl intake for it. When you replace the factory intake with an aftermarket intake in the 4bbl configuration the milage increase can surprise you. I’ve achieved close to 18mpg. With a couple modifications and timing adjustments. The 400 simply wants to breathe. The power improvement however keeps a person like me wanting to use it.

Back down to 11mpg. My 73 mach1 with a Cleveland wasn’t any better.

No wonder man. Oil embargo, safety improvements, govt. interference all dropped performance & mpg as well. The 400 was a great motor for sure but was only rated at 150 hp. That’s not much for this weight, let alone 4-wheeling.

Already! Wow. I always liked the color on cars and I don’t know why the color is generally not available from the factories. The same ‘ol same ‘ol colors.
