Happy Hippie: 1968 Volkswagen Type III Fastback

This 1968 Volkswagen Type III Fastback is happy to see you! Or maybe it’s happy because it’s located in sunny Corona, California. And, you’ll be happy when you find out that that asking price for this car is either “$3,500 or best offer”, or “$3,000”; the ad lists both prices. I’m always happier with the lowest possible price when I’m a buyer.

Barn Finds boss, Jesse, wrote about the project Fastback back in November of 2015, and that one certainly looked a lot nicer than this example does. Not to mention that it was cheaper, too! But, this car looks good, other than needing a few tweaks. Heck, who am I kidding, it needs work on the inside and out; even the tires are flat. But, tons of parts are available for these Type IIIs and the important thing is that this car doesn’t look rusty.

Speaking of the R-word, the seller doesn’t mention rust, but the body will have to be stripped and repainted if you’re going to take it back to looking like new again. Hopefully the chrome can be polished up, if not, you can find replacement bumpers, not to mention back-up lights. This car has 87,984 miles on it; hopefully it has that many more left in it. We all know that the engine goes in the rear of this l’il guy.

And, here it is. Yep, it will take some detailing work to make it look like the Barn Finds car, but hopefully it won’t be a lot of work to make it run like new again. The owner says that it hasn’t “been started in a while, but engine/drivetrain is completely intact.”

This car has supposedly been in the seller’s family for years and they were in the process of restoring it for the youngest daughter, but they ran out of time and space. As usual, the dash is cracked, but in an afternoon you can put a new one in there.

You can see that you’ll need to order up an interior kit for this car. Now’s your chance if you’re going to do a color or material change inside. There is a lot of room inside the Fastback body style, despite what your spouse says.

I would make that “or best offer” statement count here, considering what Jesse and Josh snagged that sweet, orange Fastback for last fall. If you’d like to give it a try, this car is advertised on Collector Car Ads. This one looks good but it needs a few thousand bucks worth of work, and that doesn’t make me happy with the current asking price. Does this car make you happy or would you look for a nicer one?

I believe tire compressors can be had for around $40. I don’t think I’d want to buy a car from anyone who is too cheap or too lazy (or both) to air up the tires. Even if it needs tires, used can be had for about $20 a pop. Besides all that, the price is about $2000 more than it should be. That’s what will probably cost you for a new set of cheap tires, cheap seat kit (if it doesn’t need foam), carpet kit, door cards, dash cover and to pull the motor, resealed it and get it running, rebuilding the brakes. At which point it will still be a $3000 car with that crappy paint…

I never noticed before that these have a smile like the Amazon boxes. Happy car in sad shape.

That flat four engine is Volkswagen’s equivelant to Ford’s 429. Or so says the license plate!

Maybe we are supposed to subtract the $3000 from the $3500, cause this looks like a $500 car.
