Hard And Soft Top: 1986 Toyota 4Runner SR5

The Toyota 4Runner is one of those vehicles that has changed a lot through the years, and while the more recent models are viewed as an SUV the early offerings were more like a glorified pickup with a fiberglass shell over the back.  This 1986 Toyota 4Runner SR5 for sale here on eBay is one such first-generation example, and it sure looks like a fun and well-cared-for 4WD that’s probably got some good miles left for the next owner.  The 4Runner is located in Hinsdale, Illinois, with bidding currently sitting at $12,999, but you’re going to have to offer more than that to make it yours as there’s a reserve that has not yet been met.

The seller is at the 4-year mark of ownership and says that prior to his acquisition the vehicle spent most of its life in California, where the previous owner used it mainly as a weekend driver.  The 4WD is still predominantly a cruiser on the weekends, and though the finish is not perfect the paint is said to have a nice patina.  The exterior features a custom collapsable Softopper, but also comes with the original hardtop, which is stated to be in great shape except for a tear in the headliner.

A lot of the interior is said to still be original, but there have been some modern enhancements like Coco aftermarket floormats and a Blaupunkt Bluetooth-compatible Stereo system, with the original radio included in the sale in case the next owner wants to put it back in instead.  The seats have recently been reupholstered, with custom-built headrests for the rear units.  Things inside are looking nice and tidy to be 36 years old.

Powering the 4Runner is a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, which the seller describes as bulletproof, and they certainly have developed a reputation for lasting a very long time.  There are a claimed 120,108 original miles, which is easy to believe as Toyota had already implemented a 6-digit odometer back in the ’80s when many manufacturers were still using 5 numbers.  No word on whether or not the motor has ever had a rebuild, but it’s said to start right up and run great.  There’s also an automatic transmission, which the seller mentions are kind of rare to find in one of these early 4Runners.

We also get a couple of photos from underneath, and things down below are looking well preserved and “bone dry” as the seller states.  This one really does look like a 4WD that’s been shown some love throughout the years and is probably mechanically ready for the next owner to enjoy without much additional work needed.  What are your thoughts on this 1986 Toyota 4Runner SRV?

This is the first year with CV axles in the front instead of the previous and sought after solid axle. I had an ’85 with one. The 22-RE is nearly bomb-proof, with the timing chain being its achilles heel. Nice, well preserved buggy, but aggh, an auto…
