K-Code Canuck: 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback

This 1966 Ford Mustang was just purchased by the seller a month ago and is sitting outside in the cold Canadian air after it was rescued from enclosed storage where it sat for the past 20 years. It is a non-numbers matching high performance 289 engine mated to a 4-speed transmission. It looks good sitting there with the torque thrust wheels but needs a new owner who wants to start a restoration. You can see the car here on eBay which is listed at an asking price of $28,000 Canadian which is about $21,500 US.  The Mustang is located in Regina, Canada.

The engine picture is mostly shadows but the original C Code 289 cubic inch V8 engine has been upgraded to a high performance K-code 289 cubic inch V8 engine. Based on stock numbers, the K code put out 271 horsepower versus the C Code which only generated 200 horsepower in 1966. The K code 289 V8 engine had free flowing exhaust, a more aggressive cam, high flow water pump and a stronger bottom end. It is not certain whether this was originally a 4 speed car but it is now. However, the shifter doesn’t look factory.

The Mustang has its needs which include replacing a rusted passenger side floor pan, both rear quarters and a dented driver side fender. The interior is worn and could be replaced if doing a full restoration. The seller has done a little engine work including replacing the carburetor, gas tank, muffler and fuel pump. The rest of the car looks pretty solid but based on its location, it would be a good idea to check it out in person.

Even though the seller says he doesn’t have time to restore the car, he states that he is willing to trade the car for a 1st or 2nd generation Camaro. He would consider a trade for a Mopar, too. Do you think this is a good restoration candidate or did the seller buy it and realize how much it was going to cost to restore it?

You would have to have pretty long arms to shift this car if you are even reasonably tall… You would need ape-like arms to reach it. That vertical shifter would be the first thing to go away, and since it’s a bolt-on stick, pretty easy. Too bad you have to replace the entire thing to get rid of the reverse lockout. The car needs some attention for sure, but I like it!

Hmm. Sounds like they are calling it a 271 hp Hipo when they say they took a stock 289 and hung some hypo hardware on it, and at least the distributor isn’t a 271 hp . Looks ok from a distance but the guy says it needs body work. could be a mud queen, says he passed up 20k for it,also says he has seen rusted shells for 26k. BJ syndrome. Good luck, Canada car, Good inspection needed.
Would be cool done, like the torque thrusts.

Why is a c code rustang article titled K code?

Cool troublestang with those nice American mags on it., much better than the rusty red one I just looked at here. Talk about a straight shifter!
Forget the k code stuff and drop a 347 stroker in there for serious thrills. Car just has that vibe.

Oh man, here we go again.

Turned down 20K……loosely translated to “I don’t want to sell the car”.

I like the “BJ syndrome” comment. The “I’ve seen rusted shells for 26K” means those sellers were even more out of touch with reality.

The internet is an amazing place. Go look on line, FOR SALE, what you can get for $20-25K in a mid 60’s mustang fastback….a lot more than the long list of what this car offers and “oh….you’ll need a hauler to take it away because its not drivable” what !!?? I am a big fan of these fastbacks and I am not even a Ford guy but I think his first digit in the asking price should be a 1 and not a 2. $11,500 is TOPS and maybe too much for this “needs restoration, No matching numbers & not even drivable car”. Sorry I feel compelled to be one to bring a reality check here. OH….it was a Shelby GT350H….oh that’s right, no it wasn’t.

Who cares if it is not a matching numbers car, it was born a nothing much car and BTW, not having matching numbers means ummm…… you get LESS money for it when selling it!!!!!!

“Well honey I put it up for sale and there were no takers, practically gave it away…, sorry looks like we’ll have to keep it”.

There are no numbers matching 65 66 mustangs unless the are a true k code car. K engine blocks are the only blocks that were stamped for mustang in those years. Definitely not the right shifter. That being said we’ve all seen much worse! 10k for the car and your close to upside down when your done if not completely.

As Gaspumpchas said above, the first thing that struck me was a vacuum pot on a supposed K code motor distributor — they didn’t have them they only had centrifugal advance. Then take a look at the ad and blow up some of the pictures and it gets a little more scary. It’s obviously got a quicky paint job on it and if the prep on the underside of the hood, door jambs, and rockers is any indication it’s a “make it pretty for the camera and get it out of here” paint job. The underside of the hood was obviously sprayed in place and already has rust busting out on the leading edge and the tops of the hood hinges, inner fenders, and top of the core support were sprayed body color. Door jambs show weather stripping oversprayed and door switches all painted white. Rockers were painted over undercoating? or something else with texture. I guess the seller figures no-one is going to come actually look at it in Canada (and they are probably correct) and it’s listed plainly as “no returns”. Newish gas tank shows someone tried to get it running but ad says it starts but doesn’t drive so you can’t put any value behind whatever drivetrain is actually in the car. Even at $10k plus shipping I’d be worried that you’d be way way way upside down fixing everything that may be hiding under that paint job. Too bad, I love these cars but this has all the warning signs of a big money pit.

I agree. At best this is a 10k car and it would still be sketchy.

Will get the Bring A Trailer aka “Bring a Banker” treatment and end up there later this year with super fancy photos, stripes and a Shelby sticker on the dash for 3x price.

Interesting story,,,,BUYS the Mustang a month ago for a SLOW and steady restore. And now has run out of time? Sounds more like FLIPIT while the ink on the title is still wet.

I looked at this car before this current owner bought it and walked away for $20K, very rusty, needs new floors pans and torque boxes, originally an automatic car and the current color is wrong. I was given the appraisal by the previous owner which makes a note of all these things. There is nothing original about this car currently and it would take a lot of money to turn it into a $40-45K car so just go buy one already done and keep the extra $15K in your pocket.

Well we all know it’s a repainted car and the body work was done with it!! 9 pictures and none of the trunk!! No pics of the rear frame rails!! One pic of the rear end so close you can’t see the frame!! Looks like the gas tank is new too!! I would beware of this one!!!
