Hidden for 50 Years: 1960 Chevrolet Corvette

This 1960 Chevrolet Corvette supposedly hasn’t been seen in 50 years, locked away in various garages for the last few decades. The car is equipped with a non-original 327 but also comes with the numbers-matching, partially-disassembled 283 engine block. The hardtop is also included with the original soft top underneath. The color scheme is about as perfect as it gets for a C1 Corvette, and the seller doesn’t believe it to have significant rust. It’s not perfect, but for a long-dormant project, it looks quite complete and easily restorable if the seller’s beliefs that it’s not rotten underneath holds true. Find it here on eBay with three bids to just over $30,000.

The seller is listing it on behalf of a friend, who inherited it from his uncle. The Corvette has lived in Florida and New Jersey and comes with a clear New Jersey title. The trunk lid was removed for a repair and never fixed, but the lid is included. While the wheels are period correct, they’re not OEM and they’re mismatched. The good news is the original hubcaps are included, and it gives you the sense that despite being a bit rough, the Corvette was never extensively torn down or otherwise disassembled and forgotten. The chrome bumpers look decent, and the white hardtop matches nicely with the white coves.

The Corvette is the preferred spec, featuring a manual gearbox with a red interior. Overall, this C1 has a lot going in its favor in terms of how it was originally ordered. The 327 is a decent upgrade as well, and you don’t have to feel guilty about the non-stock alteration given you have the original block to work with. The seller notes the Corvette was parked in a commercial garage in the 1970s for reasons unknown and hasn’t been started since, just bumping around from storage space to storage space ever since. The good news is all those years of indoor storage means the interior hasn’t perished, but you won’t know the condition of the soft top until the hard top is peeled off.

The condition of the matching block is unknown, and the seller further notes that “….the two four-barrels, intake and heads have been removed presumably in the early 70’s….given the twin carbs, it’s either the 245 hp or 270 hp version.” The details are a bit shaky on this example, and the seller admits that he’s not an expert in this era of Corvette. A more in-depth history report would definitely spur some further interest, along with photos of the Corvette in the air. Overall, it’s got the right equipment, and while it’s a project, the condition makes it seem entirely deserving of restoration – or, bring it back to driver condition and enjoy it as-is for the time being while a more extensive refurb awaits. How would you bring it back to life?

These were great in the day. Owned an Ermine White/black int and top/270 hp/4 spd when I was 19. Stories could be told. Then it was gone and I was back to school.

The tach redline suggests a 245 hp engine.

Given the redline on the tach, it was the hydraulic lifter version of the 283, 245 hp. Sad that this is all that 30 grand buys.
