High-Performance SUV: 1993 GMC Typhoon

If you’re on the roads these days, SUV models are just about everywhere, but few of them are exciting or noteworthy in any way. That alone makes GMC’s Typhoon such a special model – this SUV was powerful enough from a performance standpoint to challenge various sports cars from the era, such as the Ferrari 348ts, Acura NSX, and even General Motors’ own Chevrolet Corvette.  This driver-quality 1993 GMC Typhoon is available here on eBay, and the only thing it needs is a new owner.

This superb SUV is available in Ozone Park, New York with a clean title. The seller mentions that while there are minor imperfections, there isn’t anything that should deter a serious buyer from considering this low-mile Typhoon.

Most Typhoons featured a black exterior color, just like this one. The seller acknowledges that there is slight paint fade and some peel in the clear coat, but otherwise, it is a very clean truck. Even though it is a New York-located vehicle, there are no rot issues, and the advertisement includes a few photos of the undercarriage.

There are a handful of changes inside the cabin of this truck, such as a Momo steering wheel, carbon fiber accents, seat covers, an aftermarket stereo system, and gauges mounted on the A-pillar. However, everything is in functioning condition.

Every Typhoon featured a turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 engine, which paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The engine made 280 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque from the factory, resulting in a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds. This particular Typhoon has traveled 57,780 miles, and the seller notes that it runs and drives very well, with no leaks, no smoking, and no dashboard lights.

The Buy it Now price for this SUV is $15,950, and there is a required deposit of $500. Do you think you would add this sporty SUV to your collection?

Replace the steering wheel with an oem and dump the gauges! Nice otherwise…

The benchmark for the Q-ship Trailblazer SS, this was another of GM’s brilliant flash-in-the-pan moments of little fanfare but terrific performance in its time: it actually out-performed the Trailblazer SS (AWD) in 0-60 times! Having owned an SS, a Typhoon/Syclone would be as much fun to own IMHO..

So far this year, there have been two Syclones, and now one Typhoon…I didn’t know that I’d wandered onto The Weather Channel site, LOL!! ;-)

To say nothing as well of the multitude of Tornados!! Wait-oh, those were Toronados…but we have seen flashes of (Ford) Lightning, as well as the occasional blast of a (VW) Scirocco. These may preclude (Chrysler) Cirrus or (Dodge) Stratus before a (Geo) Storm sets in..
Weather or not this continues is anyone’s guess-there’s my forecast, anyway!

If I was going to own a SUV, this would be it although I would consider a BMW X3.

WAY overpriced for a Black/Black. The mileage is nice, but it’s been messed with way too much to ask that “all original” money.

The original roof rack is missing, it’s got door handle escutcheons from a 92 Typhoon, center caps from a 91 Syclone (or someone painted the GMC red), the OE mirrors were replaced, along with the steering wheel as previously mentioned. The billet grill doesn’t bother me, but the plastic surround was never even painted (probably aftermarket junk) and those ricer taillights need to go as well.

Oh, speaking of mileage, the truck has been driven about 1,700 miles since the last time it was on eBay….. 8 YEARS AGO. Who knows what can of worms is lurking in this $8000 truck, potential buyers beware.

Question: Does this truck use the Torsen T-3 Differential like the Trailblazer SS?
        Thanks in Advance

Way, way too many boy racer modifications for me… and that begs the question, with those mods just how was this driven?

Question: can I turbo my 2005 GMC Safari 4.3 with 89,000 miles without blowing it up, the factory 190 HP is getting old like me. Thanks for your time.

Bill, I’m nothing of the knowledge you’ll find with many of the BF readers, but I think it’ll depend on how much power you want, what kind of wear/tear you’ve on your motor presently, what stress you want the rest of the drive line to handle, if your brakes are up to the task, and a bunch of other factors I’m sure I haven’t covered. The way your truck is engineered/built will take you on many more miles if you are faithful about servicing it routinely; adding go fast stuff can often end its-and your-life more quickly if it’s not done in concert with the other affected components being upgraded too. I’m betting your mechanically savvy too and you know just rebuilding the motor to spec would do a lot for it.
Ask someone how they found out the hard way..and if no one else will own up I can give you some gruesome personal history.

You can turbo virtually anything you can dream of, but how long it lives is usually related to your right foot… how much boost do you want to throw at it? Parts not designed for high boost levels won’t survive as long as motor’s built for boost, either from the factory or a performance rebuild. But, why do really want a turbo? You want more power, and you will pay one way or another.

Sure, those tires still have tread on them, but the dry-rot cracks are big enough to tell me that driving this anywhere further than the corner store would be a risky proposition.

As has been mentioned, a lot of questions about this one, too many mods and replacement items.

Not necessarily a turbo, just trying to get a little more Pep out if a 190 hp 4.3, any suggestions are welcomed ty

      Bill,
Try changing the air intake system using one of the dry filter kits; that and upgrading the exhaust system helped our 2004 Blazer. We were exploring the option to have the ECM reflashed but sold the Blazer for a nice profit before finding out if EFILive could do that for it..
