High Style: Lincoln Continental Pucci Edition

pucci1

You’d be forgiven if you find it difficult to keep track of the various special editions Lincoln rolled out in association with famous fashion designers. From Bill Blass to Cartier, all the big names in style seemingly graced a Lincoln at some point in the 70s and 80s. This 1983 Continental Pucci edition here on eBay looks luxurious in its unique paint code and carriage roof design, and bidding is active with the reserve unmet.

Of course, big on style did not translate to big on horsepower. Torque was decent, with 231 lb.-ft. from the Windsor V8. But with only 129 b.h.p. from 5.0L of displacement, these were indeed the dark days of performance. It might explain why, then, domestic manufacturers kept pushing out special editions like this Lincoln as if in an effort to distract drivers from the lack of acceleration they likely experienced.

But the Pucci edition wasn’t about speed – it was about style and rich leather seating surfaces. I’m sure somewhere in that interior Emilio Pucci’s signature is emblazoned for all of eternity, something sure to impress your passengers when they aren’t marveling about the unique colors and options found in your high-style Lincoln. The Pucci editions wore a special paint combination, with a “Dark Blue Cambria” cloth top over a “Blue Flannel Mist” body. Now, don’t you feel special?

Of course, the classic wheel hump out back is present, along with the Continental lettering along the perimeter. I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or my desire to act out scenes from Casino in real life, but I’m coming around to these big-body coupes. All of my cars tend to operate at some threshold of frantic, either because they’re actually quick or you need to hustle them to stay ahead of traffic. A big car that can just loaf down the highway is starting to appeal mightily – and it might even make me more fashionable as a result.

I owned, for many years, the sedan version of this Pucci series Mark VI. Blue Flannel Mist combined with the blue leather interior and many other contrasting colors made this winning design so very pretty. This one has, most likely, been repainted. It’s supposed to have a sparkling silver pin stripe which is missing. Also note that the plaque on the right front fender has been placed in the incorrect position…
The headlight doors have the very common leak in the lines and stay open. More pictures are needed….and more description too……

I’m pretty sure I see a pinstripe down the side!

      Puhnto,

There’s a pinstripe on it but that isn’t the factory applied ‘Pucci’ pinstripe . That’s an aftermarket pinstripe.
The Pucci designer series had a wider ‘frosty’ metallic silver pinstripe . Perhaps a current owner can take a photo of the correct pinstripe and show it here?

The real question is which Tony, Sonny or Fredo owned this car and how many dead bodies were hauled in the trunk?
    Check for blood stains huha

Lack of good photographs is a bummer.
The single right side photo (none from the left) leaves me with the impression that the car sits oddly on the rear suspension. Funky springs? Rebuilt wreck?
And a lot of non-factory wires appear in the engine compartment.
I’d be concerned about the “real” history of this car, whether a CarFax showed it or not.
