Hobbit Hearse: 1959 Morris Minor Traveller

1959 Morris Minor Traveller

From Michael S – British Country Estate Wagon from the Mid-Century or a war wagon of the British Army. Original paint was Bronze Green, but a Land Rover color – that was used by the British Army from 1959 to 1963 – was applied when this vehicle was first registered. It came out of Canada, went to Seattle, then to Clarkston, Washington (for 15 garaged years), and finally to Boise, Idaho. Find it here on craigslist where it’s listed for $12,500. Trades for CJ5s may also be considered.

Minor Interior

Garaged and spar varnished about 6 coats a year. No rust, great wood, a small blemish (not dent) on driver door. All original (1098 engine), but interior done in tasteful velvet-like green. Back seats replaced with comfortable foam and cloth covered platform.

Good Wood

Driven almost daily except when the roads are icy – Can’t trust others. It’s been driven long distance (300 miles) without incident. Since original it drives like original – drum breaks, no synchros, etc. A hearse for Hobbits…

Lose the window tint, repaint the wings (and delete the trim pieces) and get proper seat upholstery (and rear seat), please. Otherwise, this looks a winner!

I wouldn’t do a thing to it beyond those details except make sure the mechanicals are in good order. If the seller thinks it has no syncros, a gearbox rebuild might be called for, as the Minor box had synchros on second, third and top.

Not sure about the price, but I’m sure some Minor expert can chime in. Seems to me the last couple of Travellers I saw for sale were pricey, too.

You are right. There are synchros except first. Replaced lay gear last year.

1098 not original for this year. Did not have that until 1962.

you are correct. 948 was for 1959 . . . which is the year for the serial number.
For some reason the first registration I could find was 1963 . . . so either the 1098 was put in and then reregistered under the engine year or I don’t know. . . 1959 to 1963 was when the British Military painted the Travellers the Bronze Green, perhaps that is significant. Or it could even have a counterfeit serial number. I could only find the plate on the firewall.

I would have to stop in Nashville to pick up a 300.00 Midget with Wire Wheels.
Dual Carbs, Ribcase Transmission, 3.90 rear, Disk Brakes, and the knock off wires
Styling and profiling at 75 mph.
