Horse Barn Find: 1972 AMC Javelin

jav1

The seller of this 1972 AMC Javelin had grand plans to turn it into a road course car (an idea I truly dig!) but that’s just not happening. That might be why it’s been stuck in this cow pen beneath a horse barn, leaving its dry Arizona sheet metal exposed to the elements. It’s going to take a lot of work to get it anywhere near competitive form, but take a look at it here on eBay and let us know what you’d do with this farm find.

Suffice to say, the interior is destroyed. I guess that for all the good a sunny, dry climate does for a car, it can also destroy a fair amount as well. Perhaps a track car/drag car set-up makes the most sense since you can simply toss the interior, weld in a cage and fabricate a dash. Buy some racing seats and harnesses and get racing. Otherwise, have fun tracking down OEM parts.

While the engine is free, I do not think the seller has done much work to get this car running. It’s been sitting since 2002 and he doesn’t offer up much info about whether it’s matching numbers or if it’s been rebuilt. If I were to hazard a guess based on nothing more than photos, I’d wager that the sun-beaten exterior wears original paint based on the engine bay color.

While the floors are solid, there is rot-through elsewhere on the body. This would be a true labor of love to restore this car, especially when there are better examples out there. The seller has set a reserve and bidding is at a hair over $300 – where do you think this one will go? What would you do with it? I’m afraid it’s destined to be a parts car, but it’s not the craziest thought that the mostly solid body (save for that weird hole punched in the trunk) could be the basis for a track beater.

Wow interior looks to have been eaten by a bunch of rats, stored all that time with no air cleaner under a horse barn, way too much work for a year of Javelin I’m not fond of, love the earlier AMX’s.

If this was an Alabama State Trooper car with the 401 and all goodies, I’d hop on it.

I don’t think the concept of “matching numbers” works with AMC cars, there is no VIN stamping on the engine block, only displacement.

I’d use it as modern car base. Gut the interior and do a full costom job on it. Since your saving it sky’s the limit. Digital cluster, nice stereo, good sub and speakers. Go total show car. I’ve seen lots of other clasic cars done this way never a javelin.

Looking at those seats, I’m sure you’re going to find a pretty big mouse house in this thing.
A salvage yard and parts supplier dedicated to AMC muscle cars is only seven miles from my house and I’m sure they would have most everything you would need for this car or may know where to get it. That and the fairly decent sheet metal makes this tempting if the price isn’t too crazy.

Unmolested engine compartment.. ok… What about the molestation on the rest of the car?? Hood & roof are tissue paper thin… Interior is close to worthless and check out the wiring harnesses..

Drop the engine and drivetrain and hold on for a good body that needs them..

This car is a whole nicer then it looks. Looks to me like years of sun and heat damage to the interior more then mice the owner simply pulled off the dried seat covers as there common to split in all areas not just AZ. If it were rodents chunks of foam would be missing. Typical rust issues would not be an issue and parts wouldn’t be a challenge. First order of business is to loose the incorrect Mopar rims.
