When you hear the name Porsche, what images come to mind? Some people think of James Dean’s 550 Spyder. Some see the red 930 turbo poster car hanging on their wall in the 80s, and others see the yellow Carrera GT. No matter which model comes to mind, Porsche and performance have always gone hand in hand. A tribute car to one of these icons is for sale here on eBay. Listed for a price of $169,990.00, or best offer, this car is definitely not cheap. But with less than 20 original examples produced in 1968, this is the closest many people can get to this famous model.
From the earliest days of Porsche’s racing efforts, its engineers have always understood that weight is the enemy of speed. From the 356 model that won its class at Le Mans in 1951 to the present-day GT cars, Porsche has always understood that light cars win races. This mindset led the engineers at Porsche to develop the first lightweight version of the 911 in 1967. Using every lightweight engine component and panel they could, these cars came in 500 pounds lighter than their showroom counterparts. Originally built to race in the sports car class, they never met the correct requirements, and were forced to race in the prototype class, where GT40s and the like outmatched them. Porsche ceased making these models in 1968 after creating roughly 20 examples, making them exceedingly rare and valuable in today’s classic car market.
The ad (which is a truly good ad, for once) shows that this car was built with no expense spared and may well rival the performance of a real 911R. The ad states that more money was spent on the build than is being asked, which is usually valid for these tribute builds. Therefore, they can generally be seen as a good value for the total assemblage of parts. Of course, $169k is not a small chunk of change, so please take that with a grain of salt. But, if you are a Porsche enthusiast with a lot of disposable income, this car would be a great way to own a car you can drive hard and enjoy without worrying about damaging an original R.
What is your take on tribute cars? I know I have seen some cool ones, and some poorly done ones, as well. For any fan of vintage racing, the quickest avenue onto the racetrack is to build a tribute and rub fenders with your fellow enthusiasts. I certainly can envision a lively drive around the Nürburgring and many other circuits in this beautiful Porsche. Now how much can I get for a kidney?
Considering the neighborhood this allows you to live in 170 large probably ain’t a bad price.
More than I’m willing to spend but someone will have some great track days and I’m a bit envious.
$170,000, for this? Does 911 “R”, stand for Rip -Off”? Seems a little high.
So what is it? An R tribute, whats that, oh it´s a bitsa! A replica. Take a sportomatic Porsche and make something valuable out of it. Great! But not for me.
regards from Tyrol!
Price way out of line for what it isn’t.
it sure looks good …cost not withstanding, as I could never afford it, but I bet it is a real blast to drive …
