Inexpensive Project Wagon: 1968 Ford Cortina

The seller tells us that this is a rust free British Ford Cortina estate wagon. That’s almost an oxymoron in my experience! The wagon is located in Gerber, California and is listed for sale here on craigslist for only $1,000! Thanks to Barn Finds reader Doug M. for this cool find that will fit in anyone’s garage!

You know, it’s oxidized, but I’ll bet the paint might even buff out. The Cortina was imported by Ford but never seemed to take off over here, despite some effort by Ford.

The ads touted Ford’s “Model C” and pointed out that not only did the Cortina have a racing heritage but that it was economical and inexpensive as well.

I wish I could show you things like, well, the interior, the engine, minor details like that, but unfortunately the seller did not decide to include pictures of those items. We really can’t tell a lot from what they did show.

Here’s another example. I’m guessing this is the floor of the car, but if that’s the case, where are the seats? Carpet? Oh well. Anyway, I suppose I shouldn’t be too picky for $1,000, right? What do you think?

    I can’t help but see many similarities in this car to the Datsun 510 wagon. My grandfather sold them in the sixties, and we were given a new ’68 510 Wagon. My dad hated it, and tried to break it. Nope. They were tough little cars, and maybe that’s why the British Ford equivalent didn’t fare as well? I like this little wagon, and if it’s not rotted it could be a fun commuter.

    Cortinas are becoming more popular in recent years especially the Mark 1, Lotus variants, and the 1600E. This is a Mark 2 and identified as an Estate elsewhere in the world.

    I had a Cortina MKII wagon as well.Great little car,
    & were much more solid than a 510.I think the reason that
    they haven’t survived as well is that they didn’t sell near as
    many as the 510’s,& owners didn’t know where to get parts
    for them,once the Ford dealers quit supporting them.
    This one,being an automatic (BW35),has a wider
    transmission tunnel.I had a ’68 2door MKII automatic,and it
    was the best 4cylinder automatic that I’ve ever driven.

    I believe at 1 point they had the ‘pinto’ motor Lotus sooped up? A MK III? Any1 help me w/corrections. This might B a good candidate for that (‘turboed’)? A later model even had the V6 (in OZ?)…
