Irish Green Project: 1968 Porsche 911

When it comes to air-cooled Porsche 911s, there are some key ingredients you would be wise to look for in a project: long-hood era; great colors; and a matching-numbers drivetrain. This Irish Green 1968 Porsche 911 here on eBay hits two of the three boxes with a desirable paint scheme and model year, but it has a non-matching drivetrain. Still, it looks like a very worthwhile project, and is listed with a Buy-It-Now of $21,000 and bids sitting at $8,900.

The ’68 911 is an easy car to track in terms of value, as a quick glance at auction results and pricing guides will show you that it is as close to a blue-chip investment as you can get. Collectors love the so-called “long hood” 911s, and there’s little indication these cars will ever be anything approaching affordable. However, the seller has listed this car with what I consider a reasonable Buy-It-Now, especially since the rust issues are largely typical for this model.

It will need floors and a front pan and I’m sure there are other areas of concern. The seller doesn’t go into great detail about the 911’s history but he does confirm that all VIN stampings and tags are in place, which practically guarantees this car will be restored. The interior is standard 911 fare with an aftermarket steering wheel, and while it will need restoration, it doesn’t look like the cabin has been sitting in extreme dampness for years.

The listing notes that the 911 will come with an engine core from a 1970 model; the transmission is a core as well. The engine does not turn over, so you’ll have your hands full mechanically in addition to the pan repairs. However, with a clear title, great colors, and rust that is not anywhere near catastrophic levels, this ’68 911 is a terrific restoration candidate, especially if the seller lets it go for less than advertised here.

Yikes! It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to see the green overspray which is powerful evidence that there’s way more rust in this car than meets the eyes. Caveat Emptor!!!
