It’s Targa Time! 1970 Porsche 911T

Alright, so the Targa isn’t the favorite of body styles amongst Porsche collectors, but I actually kind of like the looks of these partially roofless classics. Listed here on craigslist Milwaukee is this 1970 911T for $57,000. It’s not cheap, that’s for sure, but then again what 911 is these days? This example was found under a “pile of rubbish in Bakersfield California in 2008.”  Said to have been parked since 1980 because of timing chain failure…

But now it is a running, driving Targa with an engine rebuilt down to the case halves. It’s claimed to have all original metal, paint and interior.

The seller says that the only rust on the car is around the headlight housings and a spot on the driver’s door.

The original books, tool kit and vintage bra are included with this purchase as well.

There are some dings, some scratches, some rust, pitting and fading but this is an original example that was driven at least 95,892 miles, which the odometer shows.

The interior is original, the dash has cracked but the rest appears to be in order.

There is a new clutch assembly and all gears shift smoothly as per the seller. The carbs have been rebuilt and balanced. The original airbox is missing and there are some issues with the ignition switch and starter.  The drivers side pocket is also missing.

Yes there are still some items that need some sorting to bring this driver up to the next level, but how often do you find a rust free 911T?

    My fav Porsche color; Aubergine. I worked at the dealer at the time, and they had a sign in the front yard during a sale. The 914 was 3500 and the 911T was 7000. This was 1970-1.

    Given it’s in the upper midwest I’m surprised that, in such a decent CL listing by someone who sounds like he knows P-cars there isn’t one underside shot. That would be a red flag for me.

    It does look pretty original to me as a P-car non-expert, and the seller has done a lot of work on the car although there is work still to do. The apparently original paint is a plus—sort of, but you would need to deal with the nasty spots on the body, and then you’d want to deal with all those not-quite-nasty-but-still-annoying areas of paint that have many tiny spots dropped out. But then you’re into a complete paint job, which makes it non-original paint and adds multi-thousand$ to the cost.

    Speaking of cost, it looks pretty high to me, especially if the motor rebuild wasn’t perfect and done by someone known for perfect 911 rebuilds. Otherwise you’re paying big for less than perfect, and I think lots of potential buyers would have serious doubts. You can still find better buys in these early 911s than this car, although if someone needed to have a Targa they are not so common and someone might consider this car.

    But at $53K (apparently down from $57K) on CL in Milwaukee? I’d put it on Ebay at the very least, or some of the Porsche sites or TheSamba, or else sell it to Europe where they will pay more.

    The car is actually in Green Bay according to the map. While I am 2 hours away, I’d be happy to cruise up and look at it. I rebuilt a rusty ’67 912 and a flood damaged ’93 911 Cab, so i know my way around these a little. The best time to cruise in and out of Green Bay is during a Packer game.
