This 1977 Porsche 924 is claimed to be a barn find from Idaho, and shows quite well. The listing is ending later today, and the seller is trying to cash in on the fact that Wheeler Dealers just refreshed its second 924, due to show host and general charming figure Mike Brewer having a warm spot in his heart for Porsche’s entry-level model. The example shown here looks quite straight, and comes with the optional wire-style wheels. Find it here on eBay with a $5,850 Buy-It-Now with the option to submit a best offer.
I never pay much attention to 924s, but there are some pleasing design elements around back. The expansive glass canopy that encompasses the rear hatch; the rear wiper, which was typically an “upgrade” on the big-brother 911; and this one features the period accessory center garnish letting you know this is, indeed, a Porsche. The later cars incorporated a foam rear spoiler, which often distracts from some of the finer details of the 924.
No pictures of the front seat are included, which is a shame because the back seats look absolutely mint. The color combination is not the most common, either, so there’s potentially some rarity baked into the option code. The paint looks surprisingly shiny in the door jambs, so either it’s extremely well preserved or there’s the potential of a repaint. Carpets are a slightly darker tan but don’t appear to be hiding any ugly stains.
The seller provides the customary commentary that the 924 runs, starts, and stops. That always leaves me a bit cold, as if there’s more to the story that the seller isn’t offering – or doesn’t want to elaborate on because it doesn’t do anything better than that. The engine bay does look clean and mileage isn’t terrible at 116K. While the price seems high by a hair, the body condition looks excellent and it remains in stock condition with some nice OEM upgrades. Worth a look!
This one looks nice, but, I prefer the “buff” 944 instead! :-)
It would be worth a look, except for the fact that the original 924 was a complete piece of crap from the word “go.” We used to call it a “sport” model Audi 100LS, and I couldn’t think of a worse, or more appropriate, insult.
I own a 1979 924, and it’s very fun to drive and not hard to maintain. Sure, it’s no powerhouse but here in California gas is well over $4.00/gallon. And 29 mpg on the freeway is a fair trade off. I used to hate these cars but I was wrong. Handling and drivability better than a 912 at a third of the price.
Looking at those wheels, I assume the guy has a Dodge Omni on blocks around back.
Rex, why do you say that?
The coolest thing about these cars is the reverse tachometer – which you will certainly use trying to get horsepower or any sped out of it.
If I’m not mistaken the wheels are off the later turbo model. Had one of these as a daily driver for a few years. Did a lot of modifications to over come such things as the rear glass falling out of the frame and did some super tuning on the fuel injection to get more power. Fun driver and comfortable for long runs.
As a owner of daily driver 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS I Cant like this beautiful classic Porsche enough !
I wonder if we would have been told it was 16,000 original miles if the odometer had been 5 digits.
It says that the posting has ended? I wonder if it sold or the time is up, and no buyer? Anyway I didn’t like it! I was able to see the pictures tho! I am waiting for that just right 911 that I am looking for! I just don’t care for those paticular body style! However it’s a Poursche! A cheap one, but it would get you into the club!
It’s been relisted.

Lovely looking car. I hope it goes to a good owner.
The 924 was an ok car, but like the 4 banger 914s just did not have any guts. A buddy of mine did own a 944 turbo however, that thing would get up and go pretty good.
Porsche lobbed off half their 928 V8 engine to create the early 924 engine. Friend had one and had to replace the water pump which was a 928 part and cost about $300 in the 80s.
Actually, the 1st 924’s had the Audi engine. Porsche designed & built their own engine for the 944 (“1/2” of the 928 8cyl)…
Only the revived-production 924S from ’86-88 got the 944 engine that was basically half of a 928 V8, along with other updates from the 944 making it effectively a 944 with the 924’s narrower and lighter body and early dashboard. As Dave noted here, original (non-S) 924 production run got a VW-Audi engine.
I prefer the 944, but something about these grabs me
