L-82 4-Speed: 1979 Chevrolet Corvette

The end of the 1970’s were characterized by high inflation, military conflicts and magazine articles on the death of the V8. Does this sound familiar? Well, one way to get away from all this bad news was to walk in to your local Chevrolet dealer and buy a 4 speed L-82 Corvette. Somebody apparently did this because here is a nice example of a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette with a L-82 V8 and 4 speed transmission. This Corvette is listed here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. The car is currently bid to $8200. The car is located in Brooklyn, New York.

The base engine in the 1979 Corvette was a L-48 350 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 190 horsepower. The optional L-82 engine was the high output engine available in 1979 and produced 225 horsepower. Chevrolet produced 14,516 Corvettes with the L-82 engine. The seller recently bought this car and says that the car has its original engine and 74,000 miles on the odometer. 1979 was the first year that the base price of the Corvette exceeded $10,000.

Corvettes are typically  have a lot of standard features that are options on other cars. This car has air conditioning which is a big plus in more humid parts of the country. Unfortunately, the air conditioning is not working and there is a lot of wear on the seats, carpet and interior plastic parts. The seller states that the car has T-tops, power windows, tilt/telescopic steering and an aftermarket radio. In 1979, a buyer could order glass or solid T-tops. This car has the solid version.

The exterior of the car looks stock and the white paint looks to be in good condition. The tires appear to be Goodyear Eagle GT mounted on factory aluminum wheels. I wonder how old the Goodyear tires are? This Corvette is selling at no reserve so a new owner will be taking this one home after Saturday.

First year a Corvette cost more than $10k. 3 years later they had the first over $20k. I was there and saw the $20k sticker.

I was there to see a $40,000 sticker in 1995. Got my 95 for quite a bit less in 2019. Great car but I still can’t believe folks handed over $40K up to $65K (And more!) for ZR-1’s. I wonder if most of them were leased back then?

The ZR-1 was quite the performer for the time. That same car can still get someone in an awful lot of trouble lol.
