Austin Motor built cars and tried to be competitive in many types of transportation. This Gipsy was their unsuccessful attempt at the off-road market. It is actually larger then the Land Rover Discovery. This one has not been driven since 1982, but is said to be rust free and very original and complete. It’s listed here on eBay with a BIN of $5450 in Auburn, CA. Thanks goes to Olaf E for spotting this unique little SUV.
The body seems to be in pretty good shape. It was repainted from it’s original sand color at some point, so we can’t blame Austin for the color. There are a few blisters of rust under the paint.
The engine and transmission were removed to install an Isuzu diesel but the project was never completed. All parts needed reinstall the engine are included.
The interior and all the glass is included too, although the seats will need some help. The top bows are also included and the top is said to be good enough to be used for a pattern. This little Austin looks complete enough to be an inexpensive project. If one could live with the color, it looks like mostly assembly, mechanical work, and upholstery. With the prices of Defenders these days, this one could even be seen as inexpensive.

I recall these things. Only saw one for real I think. Let’s see, a cheap alternative to a Land Rover, just as BMC made cheap alternatives to other good vehicles. What’s to like? It’s cute and unusual. What’s not to like? Austin engine and reliability, scarcity of parts. This one just needs the right buyer.
I’d rather have the Isuzu diesel and drive train at least you keep up to traffic.
This replaced the Rolls Royce engined Austin Champ, primarily for the British Army they were also made available for civilian use in limited numbers. By the mid 60s British Army procurement replaced all Austins with Land Rovers and, as they say, the rest is history.
