Last Super Sport: 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

When you think of a Super Sport Chevelle it’s likely that you don’t imagine a 1973 model year. Many muscle car enthusiasts may even think that the Chevelle SS ended after 1972. That’s what gives this 1973 Chevelle SS, found here on Craigslist in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, some potential as a project.

With the limited number that we see, it’s a bit surprising that over 28,000 were produced with the Super Sport option in 1973. Estimates say that only 2,5000 came out of the factory with the big block 454, with the rest having the 350 small block. The seller states that this Chevelle has the original numbers matching 350 and that it runs “pretty good”.

It’s pretty easy to see that this really would be a full-blown project. The floor and trunk pans need work, most likely a result of nearly sitting on the ground for some time where it was found on a farm in Kansas. The previous owner had purchased it used in 1974 and didn’t quite get 90,000 miles on the odometer. This might be the reason why the car overall doesn’t look to be in really bad shape.

An added bonus to taking on this project is that it comes with a parts car, although it’s a 1975 so some parts may not interchange. Thankfully, both cars come with clean titles. With this 1973 Super Sport being harder to find, it’d be great to see someone give it a factory correct restoration. So, with a $5,500 asking price is this one worth taking on as a project?

    There was a local guy where I grew up that had one in dark blue w/gray graphics. It was a really nice looking car. His whole family worked at the long defunct GM plant in Tarrytown, NY. Looked just like this one.

    Chevrolet Performance will show this at the upcoming SEMA show.The LT5 crate (755hp) will feature in a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna whose hood styling copies the one on the Corvette ZR1 as a tip to its powertrain. The car has also sports front and rear spoilers that pay homage to the Laguna’s NASCAR racing stint.

    My aunt bought the ’73 Malibu Wagon, 454 4 bbl just in time for the oil embargo ! Faux wood trim. Did a lot of family travel. Even a little choked by 73 emission standards, it pulled boats and the camper effortlessly. Could not stand riding backward in the rear-most seat on the interstate though (ralph)

    I remember the 1976 Malibu Classic that my Grandmother owned for several years. That was the first car that I ever smoked a tire on (it would do a fabulous one wheel peel) or drove at a high enough speed long enough to split the top radiator hose. ;-) A new hose and a couple gallons of antifreeze, we were good to go. As I recall, it had a 4 bbl. 350 and full instrumentation in the dash. It would have made a great Saturday night cruise-in car.

    Had the pleasure of driving one of these back in the early 80’s. Triple black torque thrusts 350 small block. Loved to open it up on the freeway.
    Did pretty good for a big car. Loved those swivel buckets.

    Had a 350 4bbl w/4spd. Saginaw trans but it worked. Swivel buckets 🤪 the girls loved em . Put thrush cherry bombs on it and loved kicking it down . Unmistakable sound . Day of my buddies wedding ( I was best man) a girl got to close while we were dressing up car and hit drivers door bent the post , door couldn’t drive it any more. 21 and miss it

    GM wanted to put this body style on the market in ’72, don’t know what happened, but they had to stick with the old one for another year. That’s what I read somewhere, GM had no shortage of problems back then.

    Great cars. Stupid aftermarket will never recognize these cars. When the supply of 68 to 72 Chevelles runs out, everyone will wonder why they ignored these cars.

      George, I couldn’t agree more! And when they do make something it’s wrong, like floor pan sections. I need a complete floor pan for my 75 El Camino and nobody makes one. I’m not the only person either. If the parts were available, people would buy them but nobody that has manufacturing capability will take a chance. No guts, no glory!

    A Strike is the reason. They were also supposed to use what became the 73 Monte Carlo in 1972, but had to push it back a year. Here is the 71 Monte, with what was supposed to be the 72 Monte
