Little Convertible: 1967 Triumph Herald

1967 Triumph Herald Convertible

As I’ve explained before, I’m very partial to Heralds; my wife’s has been the most popular (as in bystanders coming up and asking about it) car we have ever had. With one of the smallest turning circles ever, room for four (ok, two kids in back) and a pretty dependable drivetrain that’s pretty much the same as a Spitfire, the Herald has a lot to recommend it. This one is located in Republic, Missouri and is for sale here on eBay with a no reserve starting bid of $3,000. The seller has included a lot of pictures in the auction (no, his Charger in the background is not for sale!). There’s some rust in the floor, and while the engine does turn over, it doesn’t start. The top is in shreds and the interior certainly needs help, and there’s some rust to be dealt with as well. I don’t think this is a bargain at this price, but perhaps the seller can be persuaded to lower his entry price a bit. The car does look straight and unusually for a Herald, the front overriders look intact. The period aluminum wheels are a nice touch as well. Would you give this little convertible a home?

This one could probably had for cheaper, but will likely require a lot more work to restore it.

NOT a bargain by any means. The rockers appear to be shot. The floor “needing some replacement” should facilitate “some pictures”. From the looks of the surroundings, the seller has some mechanical aptitude – so why not get the motor started if all it needs is a tune up? Having a running, driving car would definitely get the seller closer to the asking price. As such, this appears to be a well polished turd. Sorry for being somewhat abrasive but the ad wording comes off pretty harsh. Almost like the seller is doing all of the world a favor by offering this little car on the market…. Perhaps he bought the car without realizing what the restoration costs would run in relation to the market value and now is trying to get out from under it.

Lipstick on a pig. Overall, I agree with tirefriar.

Yep, $500 car with shiny paint. Which sucks because I also love these little cars. Pretty rare to see a convertible, but the rust would scare me off.

I parted one in 1972 to get my Spit going. Now I think it is more interesting than the car it saved.
