Little Lady Owned: 1984 VW Jetta Coupe

jetta1

Among the world of VW fanatics, a two-door Jetta is considered the holy grail of Volkswagen’s mainstream sedan lineup. They’re quite hard to find today, especially in clean, original condition, so this first-generation ’84 Jetta Coupe here on eBay is quite a find with some nice options still attached. There’s no reserve and the option to punch the Buy-It-Now button for $4K.

The seller bought the car from the original owner, the proverbial little old lady who spec’d this Jetta out with some nice options when she bought it new. Most desirable among those are the factory sport seats, seen here, which remain in excellent condition. The Jetta also features a 5-speed manual and a sunroof, but the original buyer did not opt for A/C, making this a pleasingly simple car with the stuff most enthusiasts would prioritize over cool air.

This Jetta sports one of the company’s traditional gasoline engines, which functions well enough but has some minor running issues left to sort. The seller replaced the fuel distributor with a known to be working used unit, but notes that the oil pressure switches are likely bad as the warning lights flash at different RPM levels. The timing belt was replaced at 150,000 miles by the original owner, but I’d replace it anyway just for added peace of mind.

The body is the key selling point to this Jetta, as it remains in remarkable condition for the age. It was rust-proofed when new and apparently, that has helped it survive intact despite being a Midwest car. The seller does disclose that there’s some funk in the trunk with regards to a ravaged carpet and oddly placed wood block, along with a possible rear windshield sealing issue due to standing water appearing inside after a strong rain. Still, it’s hard to find these coupes in clean shape, and the price seems fair for the issues presented.

No reserve but no Buy it Now Button for $4K. Strange.

Not a fan of the styling, looks like a Rabbit with a hastily grafted on trunk.

That’s what they were. Not sure I’d call it “hastily grafted on”, but yes these were Rabbit/Golfs with a trunk.

@ Fred W.: Pretty much exactly what it is! Nice condition though.

I had one of these in a brown metallic (antelope??) as my DD from 87-90, with a similar manual but with air. That car was a HOOT to drive with wider 205’s on the stock rims. Loved to chirp in 1st and 2nd. Considered it my baby 1802 tii / GLI Coupe. Sold it after putting on 60k+ and still had original clutch and high compression numbers.
Only issues were you always had to have spare fuel pump relays which would blow out after a heavy rain (tiny leak through firewall), plus AC vent line would clog and flood passenger foot well, and sunroof drains had to be kept similarly clean.

From the text it looks to be a newby flipper trying his luck.

Absolutely adore this car, if it was mine the first thing I’d change would be the Bumpers to the European style as the fitted ones are amazingly fUgly, other modifications I’d like to do would be either a set of 14″ Pirelli P-Slot wheels or maybe 15″ ATS Classic as they just look so good on early (Mk1&2) Golf/Jetta. All the mods could/can be removed for originality if required too (I know some people on here think that ANY modifications is sacrilege to any car but in my world “Opinions are like Bellybuttons (keeping it clean here!) as in EVERYONE has one!”. Just imagine how boring it’d be if we all liked exactly the same things!
