Living Room Find? 1968 Triumph GT6+

I’m wondering if this car came out of the living room behind it? It sure looks that way! We do know it’s been in storage for 15 years, but not where it was stored. We do know it’s now in Essex Junction, Vermont and is advertised for sale here on eBay. The buy it now price is $2,800, but even lower bids are welcomed.

If you’re thinking that a GT6 looks a lot like a Spitfire with a fastback hardtop, you’d be at least somewhat correct. There are some significant differences under the skin, in addition to the power bulge in the hood to make room for the six cylinder engine rather than the four of the Spitfire. There are also significant improvements to the rear suspension and larger brakes.

The tops of the floors don’t look bad, although the seller does mention some small holes in the front of the floorboards. The critical part is on the right of this photo, where the rear radius arms attach.

Unfortunately, the lower part of the floor isn’t quite as nice. However, they could still be saved at this point for a driver, as long as you’re willing to put in the work. And, of course, the Spitfire and GT6 get the majority of their structural strength, such that it is, from a backbone frame and the sills, so the floors are just there to hold you in place, kind of.

As interiors go, the GT6+ is a nice place to be. Yes, that’s real walnut veneer on the dash, and it doesn’t look bad. This car as a whole looks very original, even down the wheel covers and padded steering wheel. Even the gear shift knob is the AMCO accessory type that was probably fitted to more cars by 1969 than the original plastic one.

Here’s the 1998 cc inline six, which won’t turn over by hand, but I don’t think they have done anything else yet. And if those are really bias ply tires like it looks like they are, this car’s mileage claim of 55,338 may actually be accurate. The price seems pretty good to me–what do you think? And of course, would you store it in your living room?

I searhed for one of these for quite a while until I finally found one and stood by it. I probably could have got in it, but wasn’t sure I was getting back out without the jaws of life. $2800 seemed like a pretty decent price.

These are a lot of fun to drive. I had a daily driver Mk I in college. While the suspension is beefed up compared to a Spitfire, it has the same drivetrain behind that six cylinder. GT6s tend to chew up rear ends and u-joints, but fortunately replacements are easy to come by. At $2,800 this seems like a safe starting point if the engine isn’t seized.

If I had purchased this (which I really really wish I could have) it would have likely ended up as my living room…and bedroom…and possibly kitchen once my other half saw the delivery bill

Nice find, Jamie, although, snow and Triumph’s don’t mix well. Then, there’s this. https://wausau.craigslist.org/cto/6063465531.html

I clicked on the link. Oh, the poor thing…. I’ll never un-see that..
Like others here, I had one long ago. It was a fun car, decent handling, and great exhaust note. My buddy bought a 240Z , and kicked my *ss. They both rusted badly, but I now would like to have one of each. My living room is full, so not likely to happen.

I wanted to put my mini in the dinning room years ago. My excuse was that my wife wanted to park in the garage and we did not have a dinning room table.
After I recovered from what was then the hardest slap to the face I ever received I rented storage for the car.

When my wife and I moved to Sacramento decades ago I had the tail section of an airplane I was building in the living room of our tiny apartment. I’m still paying for it all these years later so know that no matter how good an idea it may seem at the time, it’s going to cost you forever!

I had a 1970 as a daily driver for several years in Central Ohio. I bought at a used car lot that specialized in used Chryslers. They didn’t want it, but I did. No problems except for the Delco? distributor. Got a replacement from a guy who built fiberglass boats. Once i got the resin residue and bits of chopped fiberglass off, it was fine.

I was at Costco the other day, doing double-takes at the 80″ and 90″ flat screen TVs. You could park your project car in front of one of those and enjoy your own private drive-in every night.

Yes, it was an early GT6+, but it was still a 1969 (even if it was built in August or September 1968). Oh, and the bias-ply tires mean nothing, as these were always equipped from the factory with radial tires, usually Goodyear G800S.

Andy, my point on the tires was that if you could still buy bias-plys for the car the last time it got tires, it’s probably been off the road for a while!

Car in the house? That’s only the half of it. Don’t let your significant other ever find out that you’ve used the dishwasher as a parts degreaser!

The only car my mother ever drove was one the same year, it was a great little car. At 14 years old I always said I was going own one, there was one problem at 18 I was 6’4″ and by the time I was 20 I was 6’9″ at least I didn’t buy one then grow out of it.
