Today’s feature car has been referred to us by Barn Finds reader AMXBrian and I thank him for his contribution. It does place me in something of a quandary. I suspect that our man is something of an aficionado of his AMX products, so I really need to get this one right. So here goes. This 1969 AMX is listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, it comes with a clean title and an asking price of $6,500.
As an Australian I have always felt ripped-off by the AMX line, simply because they were never sold Down Under. I think that it’s a shame as I believe that they would have given the muscle car offerings from Ford and Holden a run for their money. I’ve also always liked the styling of them. This one is a project, but it’s largely complete which is a plus. The body is generally in pretty reasonable condition. There is some damage to the radiator support, but the pictures indicate that this is repairable. The tail-pan and rear floor pans have been repaired at some stage, and there is some rot apparent in the rear quarters. It appears that the car didn’t start life painted white. I have been trying to identify the color of the engine bay but have had no luck, so hopefully AMXBrian can help with that in the comments below. The car does come with a number of additional body parts that include a couple of fenders, a left hand door, a spare grille, a rear bumper and a sundry other odds and ends.
The engine is out of the car at present but that appears to be potentially good news judging by this photo. Apparently it has paid a visit to the machine shop at some stage. The engine has been gone through and among other things appears to have been the recipient of some shiny new pistons. Since then the engine components have all just been sitting around in machine shop bags awaiting their fate. There is some surface corrosion evident on the block face and the seller indicates that there is the same on the heads and intake. However, none of it looks particularly worrying, and I suspect that it will all clean up okay. Once again there are a few additional parts that the seller is including such as a couple of oil pans, painted and chrome rocker covers, a couple of intake manifolds, etc.
The interior is in surprisingly good shape. We can’t see the dash, but the seller states that the interior plastic, wood-grain and trim is all in good condition. The seats will need new covers. As for the condition of the headliner and the carpet I’m unsure, although from this shot the headliner does show possibilities. There is something visible just above where the driver’s head would be, but that may just be a trick of the light.
To me this is a very promising project car. It is largely complete and it appears that some of the potentially more expensive tasks have already been completed. If I were buying it I would certainly strongly consider returning it to its original color. I do like white cars, but I think that the engine bay color has a lot more potential. For me the inclusion of the additional parts just sweetens the deal. If the rot in the quarter panels isn’t too severe then this is a project car that may require more of an injection of elbow grease rather than greenbacks. It’s definitely worth considering.
If I recall correctly, didn’t Aussie some Javelins that were locally assembled?
This would be a nice project for someone; shame it’s not a four-speed.
Mate, we got a few AMC models but sadly the Javelin wasn’t among them. A few people did private imports, but even that was rare…unfortunately.
Worth a look especially if the parts are included. Good luck to the new owner.
Definitely worth a personal inspection and possible purchase. You just don’t see many of these at car shows.
Just co-chaired an open car show this last weekend. In the years I’ve helped plus the 2 years co-chairing, we have not had a single Javalin or AMX in the show to the best of my knowledge.
If the engine bay is original, the color appears to be Butternut Beige:
And the whole car would have looked like this:
@AMXBrian – Wonderful comment. Some real good background. You are definitely the AMC go-to guy. Thank you.
For as many as I have driven, and looked at to evaluate for purchase, I don’t really know why I’ve never owned one. It’s like a ’55-’57 T-Bird, I guess. I admire them from afar. Rebel ‘Machines’, too.
WOW!!! Just plain WOW!!!
Thanks for that mate. I knew that you’d be able to steer me on the right path with the color.
Dang I would love to have this. The Javelin and AMX were among my favorite late 60’s go fast cars.
Love me some AMX’s and Javelins!! But, alas, you know the sad story about time, place and cash… So, I won’t go into it. Can I still dream?
From memory 25 RH drive amx where sold in Australia, there was one in Newcastle I passed every day going to work,I believe some went to the USA when the dollar was very low, think the original article on this was in restored car mag years ago.
I always liked these cars! This one appears to be a very good project!
