Low-Mile 1975 Pontiac Trans Am HO 455

In the dry climate of Apache Junction, Arizona lies this 38,000 mile 1975 Trans Am.  Equipped with a 4 speed transmission and 455 cubic inch V8 Pontiac engine, the car is listed for auction here on eBay. With 2 days remaining, the car is bid to $20,300. This car didn’t get a lot of respect when it was new by the media or on the street. However, looking back now, it was the best performing Pontiac you could buy and, with some minor modifications, it would blow away the 1975 Mustang, Corvette or Camaro.

The seller states that the car is very original but it has been repainted in its original Buccaneer Red and the engine has been modified. The white interior with black carpet and dash contract nicely. The seller has owned the car for 10 years and new the prior owner during the cars ownership. The Trans Am was Pontiac’s top of the line performance car which offered superior handling and performance throughout the 1970’s compared to its competitors.

The HO455 was a special engine offered from 1971-1972. However, in 1975 after the 455 was dropped, Pontiac reintroduced the Y Code 455 cubic inch engine as the HO455 in March 1975.  While the Y code 455 engine was offered in 1974, it was only available with an automatic transmission. Pontiac took a lot of grief from the media for calling the 1975 Y code 455 the HO455 because it was not different than the same 200 horsepower engine being offered in the station wagons and larger 4 doors. They dropped the moniker after 857 of the sticker HO455 cars were produced and you could order the same package in 1976. Looking back on it and considering the state of the muscle car market, it was not a bad engine and the car came with a 3:23 rear end.

So while this engine has been modified and it a steep geared 3:90 rear end has replaced the factory one, the car would be a blast to drive, is in excellent condition and appears rust free. There are not many of these cars left and I think the bidding will go higher before the car sells on Thursday.

That hot Firebird could be mistaken for a Phoenix.

No modifications were needed to blow away a 1975 Mustang. This Trans Am would eat them all day long.

Yes Duster and Dart Sport 360 were faster . A 304 Gremlin was nearly as quick.

Performance numbers needed for the 360 Duster and Dart Sport, otherwise it’s just talk.

With 200 horsepower , the Trans Am would likely lose against the 190 horsepower 360 Duster ; it must weigh at least 500 pounds more than the Plymouth

The L code 360 Dart and Valiant for ’75 and ’76 had 245 horsepower. this E58 engine was a carryover from 1974, and was catalyst exempt.

No belt on the A/C compressor but it’s not the end of the world!! It was an R-12 refrigerant system and probably never got converted to 134-A

I still own the 75 TA I bought in High School – Silver, black interior, Honeycombs. It has been through a lot and traveled from the east coast to the west coast. It has been repainted, engine rebuilt (not to stock specs), and is now it is relegated to about 2000 miles a year and car shows.
