Named after the International Race Of Champions series, the Z28 IROC-Z was one of the nicer trim options available for the Chevrolet Camaro from 1985 to 1990. The cars were capable of cornering under high G-forces. They were brought into production to compete with the V8-powered pony cars at the time and certainly held their own. This Camaro is listed here on craigslist in Manchester, New Hampshire with only 55k miles for $17,995. Thanks to T.J for the tip.
The car is a rare color combination of yellow over a Saddle cloth interior. The exterior looks to be in excellent condition and the car appears to be wearing its factory wheels. The seller also notes that the car has new tires and a factory power rear hatch and is free of rust.
The interior is a factory saddle cloth color that is present on both the seats and door panels. The dash, center column, and steering wheel are all black. The interior is said to have been recently detailed and appears to be in excellent condition. The Camaro is equipped with power steering, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, the original stereo, and a working air conditioning system.
The engine bay looks very clean. The car is said to have a 5.0 V8 engine that sends power to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic 700R4 transmission. The Camaro likely has an automatic transmission because a manual gearbox capable of handling the amount of torque the car produces wouldn’t fit. This low-mile IROC-Z is a great purchase for anyone looking for something fun, rare, and unique to drive and enjoy right after purchase. It seems to not need any maintenance or work and would be a very cool addition to someone’s collection. If you are interested in owning this ’80s icon reach out to the seller on craigslist before it’s gone.
Sara , i beleive this was the case w the 350ci motor option. Mandatory autoloader. Not so w the 305…Far from a Chevy aficionado, but if I recall the h.o 305 came w a hotter cam and put out substantially more juice than the base 305 unit. I think that hotter setup w the 5sp stick, could run pretty close to the 350s in the 1/4.
Trans wouldn’t fit to handle torque of that 305??? That must be something real special there..
This car reminds me of a Sir Mix Alot song. He wasn’t very complimentary about the male driver lol.
I remember going to the local dealership (which closed years ago) with my dad and seeing one just like this before I was old enough to drive. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. I still think it looks good, but I’m not as big of a fan of the yellow as I was back then.
Tell us more about the factory power rear hatch. I don’t know much about these but I didn’t realize a power rear hatch was available in 1986. Does it raise and lower with power assist??? Was it a common option?
It was a common option, my 85 doesn’t have it, thank goodness, because they’re always burning out, and you have to replace the motor in the hatch which isn’t easy, or easy to find one. My 85 has the 305 TPI, automatic, 215 hp, lots of low end torque, FUN as hell to drive, get lotsa looks and comments on my weekend drives. My dad bought it new off the showroom floor, just sold it to me 6 months ago. Love it
Great car and color but the TBI is a no for me. My friend and his brother had an 86 tuned port 305 auto and he gad an 87 305 tuned port 5 speed. The rear auto hatch was cool you just lower it down and the hatch motor would draw it down tight. Cool option I know the red 87 had it but I never seen the white 86 do it.
