Most 1979 Trans Ams in good condition sell in the range of $20,000 to $30,000 unless it is a special edition or a W72 400 4 speed car. What will this 1979 Trans Am sell for with only 13k miles? It is a 4 speed but has the economy oriented Pontiac 301 cubic inch V8 engine. It is listed here on eBay with 3 days remaining in the auction. The car is located in Oak Ridge, North Carolina and is adorned in bright orange and red decals. The car is currently bid to $29,000 after 16 bids but the reserve is not met.
The interior is covered in red velour called hobnail cloth which came on the deluxe interior package along with upscale door panels. Options include T-Tops, power windows, air conditioning, tilt steering and an aftermarket radio. The eBay ad does not have much of a description but I guess the seller is letting the pictures tell the story. There are a number of interior, exterior and under the hood pictures. The seller states that it is super clean and recently serviced by the local GM dealer.
After years of offering some of the larger cubic inch V8 engines available in a performance car, Pontiac did not disappoint in 1979. The base engine for the 1979 Trans Am was the L80 403 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 185 horsepower. It was only available with an automatic transmission. For a $50 credit, a buyer could opt for the L37 Pontiac 301 cubic inch V8 engine (this car) that was rated at a only 155 horsepower. This engine was available with either an automatic or 4 speed manual transmission. This is the only year that a 301 cubic inch V8 could be acquired with a 4 speed transmission in the Trans Am. The top performing engine option was the W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine. This engine was rated at 220 horsepower and was only available with a 4 speed manual transmission.
In 1979, the W72 engine option required the WS6 suspension which came with 15×8 snowflake wheels and 4 wheel disc brakes. This car does not appear to have the WS6 suspension because it is riding on 15×7 snowflake wheels. Also, aftermarket spoilers have been added to all four wheel wells. Otherwise, the car appears to be stock and well maintained after 44 years.
This was just featured here on January 11.
I remembered the speaker grill on the console, yuk.
I prepped these at the Pontiac dealership when they were new. I flogged them all. The 301 was a slug, when they Turbocharged it, it didn’t feel any quicker. The 403 was a boat anchor too. The W72 400 was the one to have. I preferred the Formula as I hated all those I’ll fitting plastic wheel well flares and this guy added more behind the wheel wells, ugh!
I love trans ams but to me this is just an eyesore color combo … Id pass.
No one is bidding $29K on this atrocity…shill bids all the way. This car is the lamest iteration of a T/A that there ever was. Those flares and pinstripes, lol!!!
Who put the decal on the driver’s side front fender, Ray Charles?
Stevie Wonder helped him!
