By the late 1980s, the muscle car era had long cooled—but GM still found ways to inject some real performance flavor into their lineup. One of the most unique expressions of that effort was the Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe. With just 6,052 produced in 1987, these fastback-bodied Monte Carlos were designed to homologate the slick aero rear glass for NASCAR competition. This example, seen here on craigslist, showing just 17,997 original miles, appears to be an extremely well-preserved survivor that’s ready for the road, or the show field.
Finished in white with a maroon interior, this SS Aero Coupe still wears its original Goodyear Eagle GT tires and factory 15-inch alloy wheels. It’s powered by the L69 5.0-liter HO V8, which produced 180 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque—modest by today’s standards but still respectable in the late ’80s. The engine is paired with a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission and a 3.73 rear end, which together delivered solid acceleration and relaxed highway cruising.
According to the seller, this Monte has been in storage since 1997, which would account for the low mileage and well-preserved condition. The car is said to run and drive excellent, and it still maintains its factory appearance throughout. The white paint appears glossy in photos, and the distinctive bubble rear glass—a signature feature of the Aero Coupe—looks clean and clear.
The Aero Coupe was Chevrolet’s answer to the slippery Ford Thunderbird used in NASCAR, and it remains a standout body style today. It also marked the end of an era—1987 was the final year for the rear-wheel-drive G-body Monte Carlo SS, making this one of the last true GM muscle coupes of the era.
For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this example checks a lot of boxes: low miles, rare body style, clean presentation, and documented originality. You don’t see too many unmodified Aero Coupes on the market anymore, especially ones that haven’t been driven into the ground.
Whether you’re looking to add a unique piece of ‘80s NASCAR history to your garage or just want a weekend cruiser that stands out at Cars & Coffee, this Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe is a tempting find.

Nice summary Elizabeth ✍️ Classic 80s GM comfortable cabin, great dashboard … If someone is looking for an Aerocoupe Monte what are the chances you find a cleaner one.
Completely agree with you Stan. Great article Elizabeth, and yes, youdbe hard pressed to find a cleaner one than this. Just look at that interior!! In fact…. just look at the whole car!!! Even the stripes are in mint condition. Very nice Monte.
This over that dry climate Grand Prix all day long.
Cleanest one I have ever seen!
fair price for such low miles. most likely smells new too. i doubt you get 1 this nice at auction for the asking price most are beat down by now. had friend buy 1 new still has it but the paint failed within the first 2 yrs.
Look at the odometer. This is a set up, has been altered, no way that right miles.
Since the odometer has 17997 miles on it , I would guess it is so far out of alignment because it will be ready to roll over to 18,000 miles in 3 miles. I may be wrong, but would like to see the odometer when it reads 18025 miles. It also could have been set back.
It is new enough to be able to pull a CarFax. That will most likely tell you if it’s been rolled back or not just by following the history.
Always loved these year Monte SS’s. Never cared for the ones that came after these. As rarer as the aero coupes are, I’d still prefer just the standard back glass if I had one.
Looks like it may need a new alternator, according to the Volt meter on the gauge cluster. LOL…
1988 was the last year of the rear wheel drive G-body Monte Carlo SS not 1987
