Low-Mile SUV Project: 1987 Chevrolet Blazer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Here’s a classic square-body SUV waiting for the right owner: a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer, listed here on craigslist in Waynesville, NC. The pictures show a complete and mostly original truck that has clearly been sitting for a while. The paint is faded, the body is dirty, and it will need some mechanical attention, but overall it looks intact and unmodified, exactly the kind of starting point many enthusiasts prefer. Thanks for the tip Mitchell G.!

The odometer shows just 5,570 miles, which seems incredibly low for a truck of this era. While it’s likely a rollover or needs verification, the Blazer does appear to be a vehicle that wasn’t used heavily. The seller notes it needs engine work and is being sold strictly as-is. That makes it a true project, but the bones are there for someone willing to dig in.

Finished in gray with a clean title in hand, this Blazer has a 6-cylinder engine paired with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The photos suggest the exterior has simply been neglected over time, not abused, which is an encouraging sign for restoration-minded buyers. Unlike many of these trucks that were driven hard, used as workhorses, or modified beyond recognition, this one appears stock and uncut.

The late 1980s Blazers are increasingly popular in today’s collector and truck markets. Their boxy design, rugged simplicity, and all-terrain capability make them appealing for everything from trail rigs to retro daily drivers. Finding one in mostly original condition, especially with low miles showing, is a rare opportunity. With the right work under the hood, this could easily be brought back to life as either a reliable driver or a solid candidate for a full restoration.

Trucks like this are also gaining traction with younger enthusiasts who appreciate their vintage looks and mechanical durability. Even if this Blazer requires a fair bit of investment to get roadworthy, its clean slate and originality make it a tempting starting point.

Would you keep this 1987 Chevy Blazer stock for weekend cruising, or would you rebuild it into a trail-ready off-roader?

I came for the classics, but stay for the humor. Hardly driven, yeah, in the last 30 years. 5 digit odometer, Mrs. Lesh. This is very similar to my ’84 Blazer, that was a wonderful departure from that dismal Jeep Cherokee. However, if you have a partner that’s rough on vehicles, DON’T let them drive a 2.8. After the ex blew up the 2nd motor, I reamed her out saying I could have made that truck last 10 times as long. Divorce was imminent anyway. In ’88 the 4.3 came out and was an entirely different motor. I really liked the truck, and having driven low HP semis, I had respect for the 2.8, it was a gutless thing though. I think my Jeep has more, and that’s not saying much. It was great in snow, dynamite a/c-heater, but rusted severely, and odd to even see one again.

The 1986+ dashes had 6-digit odometers.

That’s not a Square Body. I mean it’s nice, but it isn’t a square body truck.

This is as much of a real Blazer, as the Bronco II was a real Bronco.
