Low Mileage 396 V8: 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS

The Super Sport would be associated with the Impala series throughout the 1960s. It began as a low-production performance car in 1961 and finished the decade out in the same manner. For the years in between, it was an appearance option/model that could be ordered from mild to wild, like the seller’s car. This ’66 Impala SS has a 396 cubic inch V8, likely the 325 hp edition, and is a well-appointed automobile. In great shape with just 58,000 miles, this Chevy is in Caldwell, Idaho, and available here on craigslist for $25,500. Thanks for the keen tip, Pat L!

Both the Impala and the Impala SS had record sales years in 1965, so it’s not surprising that demand was off in 1966. But not to the tune of 50%, which has been attributed to the popularity of the new Caprice as the top Chevrolet model and growing competition from the mid-size Chevelle which also offered the Super Sport and a 396 V8. Still, Chevrolet produced 119,300 SS units in 1966, almost all V8 editions (no decent production estimates for the 396 seem to be out there).

We’re told this ’66 SS is a local car that still resides within a few miles of where it was first purchased. No mention is made as to how many owners it may have had, but it’s been well treated over the past 56 years. The body and paint look quite nice, and nothing is said about the finish being original, so we’re guessing the white has been reapplied at least once. The red bucket seat interior all appears in fine shape, though there may be a problem brewing with the seat cushion on the driver’s side.

Besides the big block 396 motor (which we assume is numbers matching), the Impala has an automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, power windows, and air conditioning (not factory). The front and rear brakes are discs rather than drums, so someone has done a conversion at some point. This looks like a great set of wheels (BTW, they’re aftermarket) that’s been reduced from $28,000 to $25,500.

Looking at that motor from what I can see in the picture, but it looks like a GM performance motor, judging from the valve covers. Lead footed youths like myself beat the crap out of cars like these back in the day. Most got modified a lot. Cool car and probably a blast to drive. The price seems good, but I would question the drive train originality. But that would only be to beat him down on the purchase price.
