Luxury And Muscle: 1985 Ford Mustang LX 5.0

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1985 Ford Mustang LX Convertible is a loaded up example, featuring an automatic transmission, leather seats, full power, and the fuel injected 5.0L V8. The seller reports that this Mustang has been in the same family’s care for over a decade, and that aside from a slightly weathered soft top, this Fox body remains in exceptional condition for a car this age and with close to 80,000 miles. The Mustang looks sharp in what appears to be an ice blue / deep gray color with factory alloy wheels that aren’t the typical 10-hole polished rollers. The Mustang is listed here on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of $8,900.

That seems like a fair price for a nicely preserved four-eyed Mustang. This era of the Fox body isn’t taking off value-wise but they’re still appreciated given how rarely they show up for sale with all the right options like this car has. Most of the time, we see the later models with the headlights that sit flush with the body, and while the style of the headlamps is a matter of personal preference, earlier examples like these are less likely to appear at the local cruise-in. Now, with the disclaimer that I’m not an expert in all-things Mustang, what is going on with that exhaust? Shouldn’t a V8 car has two single-outlet pipes on either side of the rear bumper?

It’s certainly possible a muffler replacement at a local shop led to the incorrect parts being installed, especially if the local service station didn’t have Mustang-specific components lying around. That’s a minor issue that should be easily resolved if it grinds your gears, and hopefully there’s no gear grinding happening with the stock automatic transmission. The slushbox may not be the enthusiast’s choice, but it will get the job done and absolutely let you indulge in this Mustang’s very cruise-friendly demeanor. The minty leather seating surfaces and crack-free blue dash pad are what grabs your attention here, and I’d want to fix the slightly porous soft top as quickly as possible to ensure the cockpit is preserved.

The 5.0L V8 is a fan favorite, and benefits from recent maintenance including a new water pump and radiator. The tires are new, too, and the Mustang benefits from a recent alignment. The seller contends the only major item left to address is the top, which the previous owner avoided by simply driving the Mustang only on nice days. You could do the same, and enjoy this car as-is for the time being, and save the soft top for a winter project. Fox bodies are always available, but they don’t always combine the range of options and condition this example possesses. Seems like a fair asking price to me – do you agree?

Looks like a nice Four-Eye convertible. The price doesn’t look out of line at all to me. Would make for a fun, low-stress cruiser with decent performance for not much money.

One minor correction: those are the “turbine wheel covers.” I’m not sure about the exhaust correct-ness.

“Shouldn’t a V8 car has two single-outlet pipes on either side of the rear bumper?”

Single exhaust here is correct. Only the 5-speed car, which had the carbed 5.0, had the duals in ’85 (and in ’85 they weren’t even true duals). This is the lo-po automatic “CFI” (throttle body fuel injection) car with 180 hp (30 less than the carbed car). Not much muscle and not much luxury, either. It’s also missing its “5.0” fender badges. At least it doesn’t appear to be overpriced.

Five owners please note. These type of histories always make me a little concerned, should I be the sixth, seventh, eight? etc. or just move on.

The automatic is the kiss of death for that car. The stick cars were a whole different animal. Those 14″ Turbine wheels aren’t doing it any favors, either. The only cool thing about this car, aside from being the best looking era of Fox-body Mustangs, is the tough looking, dual-snorkel air cleaner.

Prices are coming up on these cars. This one is about right with the cfi and automatic. These are fun cars that were a bang for the buck winner. And any back yard mechanic can add power to this car if they want it. But as is its still a great top down V8 run about.

As a newly semi retired hands on guy , i sold my playthings to invest in real estate and travel !
Well the investment side is great but the travelling is limited and i have found myself dreaming of a mustang/camaro/firebird topless car and this looks great but would be too expensive to bring to canada
The taxes, taxes , taxes , fees , fees, fees and exchange rate would probably double the selling price
So i will keep shopping but on my side of the border
Nice car but i didn’t know that the efi had so little power
Thanks for sharing a bit of ford knowledge

I’ve never cared for the Fox-bodied Mustangs. But I would make an exception with this one. I’ve never seen that color before. It really makes the car, both inside and out.

$8900.00 and no longer available. Sold or did the seller change his mind?

Nice looking car, too bad of the low horsepower numbers. Would like one with the stick shift but could NEVER own any Ford with the dime store, silly looking shifter in one the automatics. Is that really the best design the engineers at FoMoCo could come up with?
