It’s been about 3 years since we last featured a Muntz Jet. That’s understandable though considering the fact that only a couple hundred of these handbuilt beauties were ever produced. Some claim that only about 50 exist today. That kind of rarity can make a restoration difficult and many of these sit in disrepair. That’s a shame too because these were very special cars. Earl “Madman” Muntz was a car dealer who wanted to become a car manufacturer. So, when he saw Frank Kurtis’ Kurtis Sports, he quickly bought the rights, made a few tweaks, and started production. This example was in the same family from 1957 until about 4 years ago. It is in need of some major help, but the finished product would be stunning. This guy was like Tucker and was ahead of his time. Very cool car but you need some deep pockets to finish this one off.
Cool? Yes. Valuable? Yeah, when restored it will be. I’m sure that in this condition it’s still worth quite a bit, but I’d think that it would hurt to pay $15k for an almost one-off (you can hardly look at this as a production vehicle) needing a $75k restoration.
$38,500 seems outrageous. I wish the sellers a lot of luck; an ass for every seat, but you’d think that most of the people who really want one probably either have one already or can’t afford the price of admission.

The seller is trying to capitalize on a hot collector car market. Shows like GasMonkey, chasing classic cars, etc. make projects like this seem like a no brainer for the uneducated.
This car doesn’t appear too far gone for someone serious.

If it wasn’t so rare I’d like to see someone graft a chopped hardtop to it.
Not sure that would improve its looks.
Used to own a Kurtis Roadster, all aluminum body w/ Olds V8. Kurtis looks exactly like this only not as refined. Reported they only built 19 Kurtis cars. Mine was a 1950 I believe.

What car dealer. I believe Mad Man Muntz was a TV manufacturer in Detroit who wanted to build cars. I remember the Muntz factory where he built TVs in Detroit.
I believe it was on Linwood near Five Mile Rd. in Detroit. “Fienkel”.
Jerry, the Kurtis Roadster was built someplace in California and was an aluminum body.
