As they say, some folks are better at taking pictures than others. I’ve tried to clear up the images as much as I can of this AMX, but you might better take an in-person look at this one if it captures your eye. That being said, this AMX might just be worth considering if you are willing to go for a non-original car. It’s located in Bedford, Texas and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding is very low right now but there’s a reserve that hasn’t been met yet.
Yes, there’s rust. You can tell this has the hallmarks of a long project: no title, non-original color, and the little matter of a missing engine and transmission. The question is do you call that a project for someone else, or do you think of it as a largely blank canvas? The rust doesn’t look too awful, but there is at least a 2″ x 2″ hole in the floor as well as some body issues.
Looking back here I’m wondering about how intact those quarter panels are. There are some dents in various places as well. The car has been off the road since 1978, and the last three owners have not had titles to the car.
You can see the beautiful green that this car was once; the seller tells us it had a tan leather interior originally, which would be tremendous in my eyes. I hope someone can bring this one back! Would you put a 390 and a four-speed back in?
I love the AMX! Never had the money for one. Drool, drool. But, alas, I pen in vain.
5 years ago a fellow working at the WalMart gas station in Columbia, SC drove a black AMX to work. Everytime I got gas there I’d tell him thank you for driving that car. It made my day to see it.
I drive by there practically every day. I’ll keep an eye open for that car.
Love these cars: unassuming, unusual and quick. Closest I ever got was a Javelin and I loved it too. If you are an AMC fan be sure and check out the new Hot Rod mag cover car. The world’s wildest Javelin.

This is, for me, the perfect AMX. It’s too far gone to be a good straight restoration. That means you could really make it your own.
I have the exact same AMX with no rust, 343, 4 speed and beautiful interior and I make the body panels for these cars. So looking at this one I can see just how much work is needed to bring it back. Formidable. But on the other hand it’s a small car which reduces how long any given task will take. It’s also a great car to learn on and when done can be very rewarding. Despite what non-AMC people may think, there are more parts for these cars available than for any other AMC. The reason of course is that they are so much fun to drive.
I like it and it would not be a shame to update it, I’d still wand to keep it mostly AMC but with a 401 and perhaps a 5 spd. manual,HEI fuel injection etc. but not a full on pro touring or late model swap. And whatever color you want!
My kind of car, no drivetrain, some bodywork then make it my own if the reserve is not out of reality especially with no title.
Currently at 1600 –location DFW area Bedford TX
This car didn’t grow up in Texas car. We don’t have rust like that.
My older brother went through a time when he was buying and selling cars on a monthly basis. This was back in the 70’s or early 80’s when cars like this were just a used car. He showed up one weekend driving one of these. Copper colored. Beautiful car then and it’s one of the few that I can clearly recall.
All….I saved this car a few years ago….have pictures of it stacked three high at a crushing yard….funny it was on two mid-70’s Firebirds that all came out of a collection. It went to a AMX guy who then sold it to battle the cancer thing. Pretty sure he sold it to this guy….It’s a Texas car that’s been stored poorly…remember it wasn’t a Z/28.
Can you post the picture of it stacked on top of the two Firebirds, it would be interesting to who may want to purchase the car.
Note to self…..stop responding…..who really cares anyways…..
i really enjoyed looking at them!
And….don’t ask for me to find the fork lift pictures….it took two forklifts because it landed sooo crazy on top of those birds….took me awhile to find them…. they are on my old computer…..
Hey ya’ll, this is a good project for someone who wants a 2 seater AMX. No one says you have to ‘restore’ it, as someone mentioned, drop a craigslist AMC 360 in it, fiberglass/bondo/sheetmetal it up, paint and play. I have made a lifetime of SAVING these old AMXs & Javelins, having personally owned almost 400 of them since getting drivers license in 1976

Many, MANY of the AMCs save were bought from Houston Police auctions, storage lots, salvage yards just like this car & given another chance for another generation to enjoy!
Not all make it, this is my own Rotting Ramblers/AMCs in barns file

Hope someone picks this up, I can’t have 11 AMCs (ha ha too many projects again) as usual! Should someone pick it up, I have a huge AMC VENDORS list on my site to help you find parts for the AMX:

good luck! Eddie Stakes’ Planet Houston AMX
I’m glad to see you featuring more Javelins / AMXs here. Back in the late 70s, the parking lot at the supermarket I worked at were filled with old muscle cars that us employees drove. Everything was represented – I had a Barracuda, and there was a Challenger, an SS, several Trans Ams, a Javelin, etc, and even a Shelby Mustang. Of all of them, I liked the look of the Javelin the best, both in and out.
If I ever get back into an early 70’s car, the Javelin is on top of my list.
