Martini Championship Edition: 1977 Porsche 924

When a seller puts a minimum level of effort into listing a vehicle for sale, it can be a warning sign of a potentially challenging transaction ahead. However, in other instances, the car in question is clean enough to potentially reduce the need for multiple rounds of questions and the seller may sense that the first person to see the car will likely buy it. The vehicle shown here is a rare Porsche 924 “Martini Championship Edition” and while these special edition models do show up with some regularity, they don’t always look as nice as this one does. The seller claims it is a recent barn find from Florida and it’s listed here on Facebook Marketplace for $5,500.

In short form, the Martini edition 924s were limited to about 3,000 cars and designed to celebrate the company’s 1976 World Sportscar Championship victory. Obviously, Porsche also had long-standing ties to Martini & Rossi via corporate sponsorship, so it used the occasion as an opportunity to recognize the brand alliance. The car didn’t receive any special performance enhancements, but Porsche did add front and rear sway bars to 924 models ordered with the so-called E19 package. As you can see here, among the cosmetic tweaks were red carpeting and a special plaque below the shifter.

The bucket seats were also given a cosmetic overhaul which included red centers and blue piping. The centers have faded a but but the piping still appears to be in excellent condition. Overall, there’s very little to find fault with inside the car, and since the interiors were a significant part of the appeal of the Martini trim, it’s critical that it be intact. As a Florida car, I’m always slightly leery that the interior is washed out by the sun and fragile plastics are cracking in all the hard-to-reach places, but it’s impossible to tell from here if there are any major flaws. The steering wheel does appear to be a touch dried out, but I’d yank anyway in favor of a proper vintage three-spoke wheel.

The seller reports that the 924 runs off of starting fluid but that it will need a fuel pump if you want to keep it running. Under the hood, the 924 is powered by the familiar 2.0L inline-four making 110 horsepower and 122 lb.-ft. of torque. The exterior paint, known as Polizei Weiss, is in good shape but there’s evidence of fading/chipping of the iconic stripes that came with the Martini package. If the fuel pump is fixed prior to sale, the seller plans to jump the price to  $12,500, which seems quite ambitious for a simple repair. Regardless, it looks like a worthwhile winter project as it sits right now.

So if the seller believes the car is worth $7000 more if it’s running, and all it will take to get it running is a fuel pump, then wouldn’t it be well worth it to get it running?

Must be a real stinker of a fuel pump to add $7k for the repair!

Owned one. Loved it. However, if it’s just needing a fuel pump (doubtful), why not replace it? Seriously…..I would have to believe it’s much more than a pump to not want to just replace it and increase the value. I’d be leery buying it without a major inspection.
