Celebrity cars are an interesting subset of the collector car hobby. Some people truly are compelled to pony up the cash in order to own a car or truck once driven by a TV personality or a sports legend. It doesn’t necessarily add any real value beyond the significance of that celebrity owner to the next caretaker, so in the case of this tired 1990 Mercedes-Ben 500SL, the name “Mike Tyson” would need to mean something to you. No, he’s not the guy selling the compact grille you see on late-night television, but Mr. Tyson was known to have a deep collection of exotic vehicles and homes. This 1990 500 is listed here on eBay with an AMG body kit and otherwise stock OEM features. Bidding is at $8,100 with no reserve.
In my mind, I wouldn’t want to buy a car with a celebrity owner. The reason for this is simple: they don’t maintain them. Maybe there’s a caretaker or mechanic who does, but by and large, the cars are just another accessory that gets tiresome after a while with all of its “real-world” responsibilities like taking it to the dealership on occasion to swap out the fluids or rotate the tires. That’s the irony: the cars owned by celebrities barely rack up any miles, but they’re not exactly looked after. The seller even includes a copy of an article describing how a friend of Mike Tyson’s got arrested while driving the 500SL and the car ended up being impounded.
The interior is standard-issue R129, with no real upgrades noticeable here – but I’m sure Mr. Mike Tyson specified some upgraded speakers, subwoofers, or onboard radar detection. The wood trim is in good shape, along with the leather seats. Nothing here is pristine, and the presentation suggests a proper detailing would go a long way. The OEM floor mats are the best fit for a car like this, and I’m actually mildly surprised not to see some cheesy aftermarket carpets in here. The AMG influence appears to have stopped with the outside body kit, as I don’t see any other custom touches inside – not even an AMG-branded steering wheel.
The 500SL was owned by the woman you see in the pictures here until recently, and it sounds as if the Mercedes has been stationary in her garage for six years. There’s no obvious reason given for this, and the seller notes that with the tank dropped and cleaned and fresh fuel, it fired right up. However, he cautions that it will still need proper servicing and going-over before it can confidently be called “road-going”, which is just common sense for an older high-end luxury car that’s been sitting. I wonder if Mike Tyson is reading about the 500SL and getting nostalgic – perhaps he’ll even throw in a bid to get his old car back.
No word about a pencil in the glove box with his bite marks on it?!?
Terrible method of storing that heavy hard top!
First thing i thought too. That is ridiculous
There’s no truth to the rumor that an ear was found under the driver’s seat.
Congratulations you probably destroyed the soft top by placing that several hundred pound fiberglass top up there
The way that man treated things, I don’t think I would want to own this either!
This was Tyson’s? That should add about $1 to the sale.
Bent grille, just like Mike.
Looks like he beat his cars worse than he beat his women.
Someone much “heftier” than the woman in the picture last drove this. Look how far back the driver’s seat is..!
“…bid to get his old car back…”
