608 Horsepower: 1968 Chevrolet Corvette SS 427 L88

A performance catalog dedicated to your particular make and model is perhaps one of the more smile-inducing moments of the car hobby. Knowing that either the in-house skunkworks of a major manufacturer or an aftermarket company closely tied to the OEM has an arsenal of go-fast parts at their disposal is enough to make you buy a particular car just to have access to it. This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette here on eBay is a sympathetic tribute build to what you might have created if you owned this car in the early 70s and had a wad of cash in one hand and a Motion Performance catalog in the other.

The Corvette was purchased from the second owner in 2006 and then treated to what sounds like a no-holds barred restoration by a shop in north central Massachusetts. As you can see, this Corvette has been modified both body-wise and under the hood, with those sexy ZL1 flares seamlessly molded into the body. A Motion Performance hood was added, along with Motion Performance wheels and center caps. A custom gas cap was added as well.

Despite the extensive modifications, the Corvette remains surprisingly stock inside. It’s also a bit of a timewarp car owing to a high degree of preservation. The Corvette will come with its original window sticker, gas tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate, and complete documentation back to the original owner! In addition, the seller will provide all of the corresponding receipts from the restoration. It is equipped with power brakes, AM/FM radio, and tinted glass.

The drivetrain is a monster, featuring an L88 engine paired with a Muncie close-ration 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes they began with a NOS “over the counter” L88 block and then handed it off to the experts. It was balanced and blueprinted at PK Machine in Fitchburg, MA. I’m sure plenty of upgrades were thrown at it, and fortunately, you have the F41 suspension to help keep that power under control. This is a seriously cool car and with a report of 608 horsepower on tap, I bet it’s fun to drive too!

If you listen closely you can hear the purists crying. Lol. Love this thing. It’ll be interesting to see how final bid will compare with an original Motion car.

I’m first on the list if my friend decides to sell this one.

I agree, Bob. One of my neighbors just rolled up in a new 2022 Vette expecting me to drool all over it. It was all I could do to not break into a rendition of Shania Twain singing, “That don’t impress me much.”

Anyone can write a check, but a hands-on build will be the only thing that gets MY motor running.

In my opinion it’s cooler than a real Motion car because you can actually drive it and enjoy it without killing its value. 👍

Always the same old snarky dig at the purists from somebody. Here is some news buddy. I am the ultimate NCRS Corvette purist and I love what I am seeing here! This is a true time capsule and a great homage to Joel Rosen, Martyn Schorr, Baldwin- Motion Performance, and a time that is gone forever. Try not to be sure of us “purists” We might just surprise you.

This isn’t for everyone , but for the average hot rodder , this car is way cool . But since I haven’t won the lottery . Just a little out of my price point. Nonetheless this car is gorgeous .

I can’t imagine how this would handle with that kind of horsepower!
My C5 with 350 horsepower is scary fast. Mind you I’m a 68 year old guy who is not out trying to race all of the souped up Honda’s with the young dudes driving them.
    Still a very cool car.

Lean on it with those crappy tires and it’s going to handle like it’s in 6″ of snow.

When it’s at 40 grand and hasn’t met the reserve, this car is not it. I like the upgrades and options but try reselling it later. It’s going to take a certain type of person. You could definitely find one with a much better price and create the horsepower you are looking for!! Ridiculous if you ask me!!!

If you have the money save it and hope you see the real ZL1. That would be the 69 ZL1. I think it was the fastest car in the quarter mile produced in the 60’s I think it was like 10.6 from the factory.

With only a handful made the chances of finding a real ZL1 are slim. One is/has gone to auction recently, be nice to see the selling price.

This Rat is out of my range, too many other things going on but would love it ? You bet! Be the master of speed shifting & showing the uninformed that a warmed over Rat in a Corvette eats what it wants too!

Possibly overdrive. That was a Motion thing. If I remember correctly.

Yeah, that’s for the Hone overdrive mentioned in the article. Last time I saw one of those was in a 69 Chevelle SS back in the 70s, so period correct, I guess. I wish there was a pic of the installation.

Looks like the control for the overdrive unit that was used back in day before 5 and 6 speed transmissions

I’m not a purist at all, more of a resto mod kind of guy. The car is cool but I’ve never liked the fenders on anything being flared out like that. Just doesn’t look right to me.

Those heads are orange which typically indicates cast iron heads and the L88 used aluminum heads so not exactly the same. Weight is weight. I love the car and just sold my 69 L88 hill climb / track car and I will say, that car was a blast to drive on the street with more raw power than control!
Awesome ratio in my book lol

    Nice job Ron!
Ron’s Auto does great work. I live in Massachusetts and has seen his workmanship at a few Corvette meets years ago.

Most all Vette’s, any year, are like body builders. This one is a body builder on steroids!
