Motoring Monday: 1961 Land Rover Survivor

l1

Despite having had some work done, I’m calling this 1961 Land Rover Series 88 IIA a survivor because it’s still wearing its 54-year old paint! With only a minor amount of corrosion visible, a decent interior, and lots of work done, the seller even describes it as a potential daily driver. Somehow I’m having difficulty envisioning driving this at the highway speeds I travel during my commute, but whatever floats your boat! It’s located in Warren, Rhode Island and is up for sale here on eBay. The buy-it-now is $9,900, but bidding is currently $3,000 less than that. Although I’m not a fan of white letter tires on Land Rovers, I have to give the owner credit for installing “Rover” tires! Take a look at this nice Land Rover and let us know what you think below!

As they go, this looks like a pretty well preserved example, mostly all there. I restored a 1961 in starting in similar condition except much better underneath and drove it for about 10 years. A lot of fun to restore because it is mostly very basic. Coming up with swivel balls/front suspension parts probably not so easy today. Painting the aluminum body takes some special effort.

Nice example. Without an overdrive, it’ll be a bit slow. If you’re over about 6′ and love your knees, keep looking. :-)

This is right up my alley. Shame I have too much money in other crap right now. Swivel joints are not that hard to get now. I replaced them on my 92 Range Rover and the suspension is pretty much the same as these. Their thoughts were why change crap when it’s worked for so many years.

Nice little 88! I love the early series II landies, with the xception of all the natural rubber bits that go bad almost immediately and chasing rattles. They are much better if you can stick a Salisbury rear diff in so as not to stick elsewhere. They had MG TC rear axles, which tend to snap if someone is foolish enough to attempt driving in low range when in 2 wheel drive. We used to explain this away as being well thought out fusible links. Heh heh….

I’m not up on Land Rover values but I seem to reall some auction prices lately being way higher than the price of this car. The condition of this one isn’t as good as the auction cars, but if you like these, and if the actual condition matches the seller’s description, this could be a deal.

The SMG Guide has these at $11-$25K for #2 condition, and I think those values are out of date based on those recent auction prices, so this still looks good. It’s up to $7,900 with almost 8 days left to go, so some people seem to agree.

I never understood the spare tire on the hood , unless you get more flats than you check your fluids.

Had a 59 with 60K original miles. Sold it to a guy in PR who restores them. Neat little trucks!
