Motoring Monday: Triumph TR4 Barn Finds

Triumph TR4s

How often do you have the chance to start your own Triumph TR4 fleet? These three cars are being offered together with a bunch of spare parts by the same seller, or they are willing to sell them and the overdrive transmissions that come with them separately. They are located in Mechanicsburg, Ohio and are listed here on craigslist, with the entire package costing $12,500. Two of the cars are said to be very solid, with another one being a parts car or ambitious restoration project. All three have the rock-solid wet-liner four cylinder and of course those distinctive Michelotti Italian-designed body lines.

The red TR4 is the earliest, being a 1963. It’s represented as having great body panels all around, and a solid frame and running gear. Like all three of these cars, the floors are suspect and there are certainly other things that would be needed. I think this is a metal dash car, which is usually considered more desirable.

The white 1964 car is described as the best all-around car, and it certainly looks solid in pictures. There are some new parts along with the sale–this might be the place to apply them. Perhaps one could get this one driving and stopping, don’t worry about cosmetics, and then restore one of the other two while enjoying driving the white one.

The black car is a 1964, and has the most desirable original specification with wire wheels and an overdrive transmission, but is supposed to be in the worst condition of the three. While I certainly see some rusty panels, the frame is said to be solid and all four fenders are bolt on, so they can be replaced. I’ve replaced the inner and outer rocker panels on a TR6 (very similar) and while it’s not the most fun thing I’ve ever done, it’s certainly possible for the home hobbyist to do.

As you can see, there are a lot of spare parts (there are 7 more pictures full of parts like this one) in the ad. The overdrive transmissions are particularly valuable, generally selling for more than $1,000 each. The seller does break out the prices for the major items individually in the ad, but I’m thinking the smart thing to do would be to buy the bunch. I’m not sure about the pricing, though, and it’s obvious the seller knows exactly what they have. What do you think — and which one would you choose if you could have one?

I guess I should have chimed in! I’d like the white one, please, with one of the overdrives and the red one as a long term project.
