Muscle Car Project: 1970 Dodge Charger RT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

You don’t have to be a Mopar fan to appreciate this barn find! Just look at these photos! We see so many projects that are claimed to be a “barn find” but don’t come with any kind of proof that it really was found in a barn. This one is clearly the real deal, but it’s also going to be a big project. Thankfully, interest in Charger RTs has been on the rise, so there’s a good chance someone will want to save this one if they can get it for the right price. You can find it here on eBay in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The seller doesn’t offer much of the car’s story, but they claim to have found it in the barn about 3 years ago. After buying it they extracted it, trailered it home and cleaned it up, but that’s as far as they got. It’s claimed to be solid structurally but has rust in the floors. It appears that they already own a dozen or so other Mopar projects, so either they’ve realized they don’t have time to fix them all, this one is simply too rough or they know it won’t be worth enough finished to cover the cost of restoring it and make a profit.

Whatever the story is, at least they are moving it along rather than leave it out to deteriorate for another 20 0r 30 years. It has enough rust as is, so the sooner someone can get it inside and treated, the better. The seller notes that it has a 440 V8 currently under the hood, but that it isn’t the original engine. This could very well be the reason they are selling it, as having the matching numbers engine will have a significant effect on the resale value once it’s done.

Being a real Charger R/T definitely makes this car worth saving, but admittedly the asking price seems quite high given the car’s overall condition. We’ve seen plenty of Mopars in this condition or worse saved and turned into beautiful drivers, but getting them there wasn’t cheap. If you absolutely have to have a Charger R/T with a 440, 4-speed and Dana 60 rear end, then perhaps it’s worth paying a premium? What are your thoughts on saving this Mopar?

Only asking 18,500.00 for what’s left of someone’s old parts car. What a bargain.

I’ve been staring at the pics and the price for the last 15 minutes with an expression which says the lights are on but nobody’s home. I don’t understand it.

Correctly retail priced for a real A33 Car- BB 4 spd and a Dana 60. even with NOM. 68-70 Chargers bring a premium, also for the R/T.

I wonder if the doors were changed? The 70 R/T had “scoops”.

Scoops are there, James. This is just a general observation…would it kill the seller to put on some new or good used rubber so this car can roll onto a trailer? This is why I love finding a project British car with wire wheels. Normally tubed tires hold their air indefinitely. Good luck to the new buyer. Nice original color for this R/T.

There are no scoops in the photos, 70 R/T had big scoops on the doors, over the inset ones, that stuck out. However, there are better photos of the doors on eBay that show the mounting holes in the doors for the R/T scoops.

I agree with your tire comment. I think the “barn find, as found” photos/descriptions are getting a bit out of hand. Also, the bid is up to $18,500. No money left if you are going to restore and flip (unless you gasmonkeyize it). I have a 71 500 that I’ve had since high school (26 years…gulp!). I’ve already spent more than the car is worth and I haven’t done the body yet, but I have no plans to sell. The money will perhaps be made up someday when my son (or his kids) decide that keeping a non-computerized car running is more work than it’s worth.

Or how about a super cool busy boy eh Joe? On tour being “cool Joe Machado” whose owned every super duper awesome muscle car ever!! Heading cross country looking for that old R/T. Man you are the coolest dude! Which one would that have been Joe? Seems like for a guy like you it’d be easy to loose track of all those hot Mopars!
