Muscle Truck: 1990 Chevrolet Silverado 454SS

Sometimes you can look at a vehicle, and you just know that it has been well cared for. This 1990 Silverado 454SS is one of those vehicles, and you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. The Silverado is located in Salem, Oregon, and is being offered for sale with a clear title. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $11,800, but the reserve has not been met.

This Silverado just presents really well. The paint and panels look really nice, and the bed has a tray-liner to protect it from wear and tear. The trim and plastic look good, and the decals look to be free of fading, cracking, or discoloring. The owner states that the truck has only covered 49,000 miles, and while he doesn’t reveal whether he has any documentation to verify this, the claim seems believable. He does say that the pickup spends most of its time stored away, and is rarely used.

The interior of the Silverado is original and unmolested. It exhibits the sort of wear and condition that you would expect from a well cared for vehicle with the claimed mileage and doesn’t look like an interior that has undergone any form of recent restoration. There is a little bit of creasing on the edge of the driver’s seat cushion, but otherwise, it looks very nice. The pickup is fitted with a few of the creature comforts, which are designed to make life pleasant in the cab. These include power windows, power locks, a tilt wheel, cruise control, and air conditioning.

The Silverado 454SS is called what it is for a very good and logical reason. The pickup comes fitted with a 454ci V8 engine, and this is coupled to a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission. Producing 230hp, this wasn’t the most powerful of engines for its size, but really healthy torque figures made for an excellent towing vehicle. Power steering and power brakes make for a relaxed and easy driving experience, while the Silverado has just been fitted with all new tires.

So, just what is a Silverado SS454 with this sort of mileage worth? I’ve seen these sell for as low as $11,000, but the mileage on these was substantially higher. I’ve also seen an absolutely immaculate example with less than 10,000 miles on the clock sold for $35,000. The general rule of thumb on examples with this sort of mileage, and in this sort of condition, is that around $24,000 seems to be where they sit. Do you think that this Silverado will achieve that price?

About 12k 454 SS trucks were built in 1990. In 1991 and 1992 about 3k were built. The 91 and 92 are the trucks to have because they have a 4L80 4 speed auto and posi-trac standard and the HP and TQ figures were up substantially. IThe later model years are as hard to find as hen’s teeth, but you can mod these with a new trans and a few parts and have 300HP 500TQ and surprise quite a few people on the road.
(Don’t forget to have about 500 lbs of sand bags in the back for traction and ride quality)

N.ice truck. Had a 73 gmc 2wd,stepside and 454/t400 dana rear with factory opt.#2 4:11. It was a very well ordered truck. Same as gmc sport coupe starting in 1976. I knew it was special, but had to let it go a few years ago. I was told it was a special factory show room truck. I had a document with original info that listed the window sticker at almost $12,000 big bucks for a truck than

Beautiful truck, although maybe not as powerful out of the box as the looks suggest, it’s definitely a future classic. Very subtle trimmings, considering some of the other offerings from GM at the time… a classy ride.

This is what started the resurrection of muscle trucks in the 90s. Considering that from 1981-1986 you could NOT get a 350 in a half ton truck from the factory, only the anemic 305. Yes 230 hp was a big deal in a short wide pickup in 1990. Gas was still relatively cheap and people wanted big blocks in light weight pickups. The only thing that would have made the 454SS better would have been offering a manual behind it.

For comparison, my ‘72 Cheyenne Super has the 402 and TH400. It was rated at a net 210hp. It had tons of torque and I’m sure the actual hp figures were much closer to being in the 300+ hp range.

Nice but a real gas hog and nose heavy. Would rather have a first generation ’93 – ’95 Ford SVT Lightning for performance and handling, and you can also tow with it.

Muscle truck? 454 cubic inches and 230 HP. Nothing muscle about it. The 454 SS truck of this generation was just a marketing gimmick by GM.

I had a 1999 Silverado with the 454 and a 4 speed auto trans. The thing was a torque monster with something like 295 HP and 450 ft pounds of torque.
I think I could really enjoy this 454 SS. I agree with previous comments about future collectible.

I’d take this well-cared-for truck and massage that 454 to about 300 hp. Then you’d have a very nice package✅

I just don’t know why anyone would buy a 2 wheel drive pickup? Waste of money!

I have a1990 Sport version, looks like the 454SS but is a 350c.i. 5 speed . Black with the garnet red interior, bench seat same wheels as the 454 except the center caps are silver. Has 230000 miles on it and needs a complete restoration. Bought it new in 1990z
