Who wants to be like Tyler Hoover? If you are interested in getting into the shady world of salvaged cars, this is a prime candidate. The specimen in question is this 1986 Ferrari 328 with a claimed mileage of 42,786. It is located in Freedom, Wyoming. It does have two bids putting it at a current bid price is $40,200 with no reserve. A VIN is listed to investigate further since there isn’t much to go by on the eBay listing.
The title is listed as salvage but on other sites list it as clean. Some sites also have it listed in running condition. There does not appear to be any fire damage in the engine bay upon simple observation of the picture. So, who knows if this 3.2 liter V8, mated to a 5 speed gated manual, will come to life. With no indication of what is wrong, or right about the car, this isn’t Russian roulette, this is Italian roulette.
The tan leather interior looks inviting, but looks can be deceiving. It does seem a little dusty, maybe even a bit moldy. If it is a victim of flood damage, that could be the case for the salvage. There are other pictures and angles of the car floating around the web if you Google it. It is hard to tell what is true or not true about any of the listings. One thing is for sure, the eBay bidding is higher than other sites prices.
It is located in Freedom, Wyoming. However, it has Idaho plates on it. So, this car is certainly getting around. You might be able to use the vanity plate to do more digging on what is going on with the car. Who knows, maybe after looking into all of this, you will gain enough skills to be a private investigator. If it all works out, you could even have your own Ferrari to show for it. It would make Magnum P.I. proud.
Wow, it has a Fram on it – a cardinal sin…
Fram was OE on Ferrari.
No it wasn’t, original Ferrari filters have a one way valve inside preventing the oil spilling out when removed, since it is upside down. The Frams do not.
Actually they were, and the one way check valve was to keep the oil from draining back in the engine. They had a specific # for the Fram filter for this.
To drain the oil you pierced the bottom (which is up on the car) and let it drain. You then wrapped a couple of rags around it to catch the oil.
I was a Ferrari dealer mechanic when these were new, Foreign cars Italia in GSO NC, and still work on the occasional one in my shop.
I worked at Ferrari Toronto, Canada, never saw a Fram
. So you pierced the oil filter to remove it? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the check valve?
Yes when you changed the oil you wanted to defeat the check valve.
Currently I am standing in the ferrari factory museum in maranello and here is a pic of a 365
Why spend the money. Just buy the emblems and put them on any sports car on the market today. They look just like a Ferrari.
Needs red heater hoses.
Brentton, can you please explain further your comment of “shady world of salvaged cars”? Just because a car has been salvaged makes it “shady”??
There’s one sure way to scout out any misconceptions about the state of this unit for sale and that is to click on the “contact seller” icon and establish an in person appointment to thoroughly go over the particulars…Again, when dealing with higher end exotics, it’s not for the faint-of-heart.
Go to wherever the car is an put your hands and eyes on it. I would be very careful on this one.
What an effort it must be to wipe the finger/face grease off a cellphone camera lens. Heaven forbid using a real camera.
Autocheck shows that the VIN is a 1986 Ferrari but that it has absolutely zero records posted on it. I run a lot of these on 80’s Jeep CJs, and that’s happened a couple times on ranch Jeeps. Can anyone tell how old those Idaho license plates are? Maybe this one hasn’t been running for a long, long time.
Those Idaho plates are issued after 1991.
Too bad it has vanity plates- Idaho still issues plates by county and if you know the codes like 7B for Bonner County you can tell where it came from. They also used to use half height letters for the county but about 2003 switched to full height letters, so thats another way to tell how old the plates are. Lastly, Idaho cancels and reissues all plates that are not currently registered every 10-15 years with vanity plates being the exception.
Freedom, Wyoming is right on the Idaho border and the next real town up the road is Idaho Falls so Idaho plates make sense. After mentioning the possibility of flood damage I hope you didn’t mean “There are other pictures and angles of the car floating around the web” literally! LOL!
These cars are not difficult to work on at all for a competent American car guy. Analog, very few bells and whistles, hardly any electronics. Ferrari USA helped foster the dread that if anyone without a prancing horse on their shirt touched the car, it would implode. Think of these as expensive, faster Fiat X1/9s bc that’s what they are – except the Bertone chassis is better for racing.
The Bosch CIS injection system is what gives mechanics nightmares. It wasn’t Ferrari fostering the fear of working on these things, it was the unlucky techs themselves.
at least it’s not magnum pi red!
A quick Ebay search turned up the same car and pictures which sold on September 23, 2018 for $40K with one bid. Curiously, it has a clean title? Wonder what gives? Hopefully a reader out Idaho way will fill us in on this not so sure sale.
