Needs to be Finished: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Pontiac offered different shades of brown for the Pontiac Trans Am from 1977 to 1980. In 1977, it was Brentwood Brown. In 1978, it was Chesterfield Brown that had a lot of copper and metallic flake in it. In 1979, it was Heritage Brown which was a more chocolate brown like 1977 and, in 1980, it was Barclay Brown. This project car is a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am painted in Code 69 Heritage Brown. It is located in Brea, California in Orange County. The car is listed here on Craigslist for $11,500. The seller lists a multitude of parts that have been recently replaced along with some extra parts that come with the car.

The interior of the car is the base black vinyl with power windows, air conditioning and power locks. The interior is serviceable but a little rough. The dash is cracked from sun exposure and shows wear. The factory steering wheel has been replaced which always surprises me on Trans Am. The 3 spoke factory Formula wheel was one of the best sport wheels put on a production car. The car is said to have zero miles on its original rebuilt engine and transmission.

The L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine was the base engine in 1979 and the only engine certified in California. From the factory, the engine was rated at 185 horsepower. The seller lists the work done to rebuild the engine including a .030 overbore and upgraded heads and cam. A new water pump, alternator, A/C compressor, shocks, distributor and brakes are among the parts replaced. The carburetor was also replaced with a Edelbrock unit. The seller has repainted the trunk and undercarriage.

As shown, the pain is in poor condition. The car rides on factory 15×8 aluminum snowflake wheels. These wheels (15×8) were a part of the WS6 Special Performance Package which was a handling package with bigger sway bars and a tighter steering ratio. The car is missing its spoilers in front of each tire. The seller is including a new set with the sale along with new Trans Am exhaust tips. The car has only been listed for 2 days and the price was reduced from $12,000 to $11,500.

    11,500? Thats quite a project.

We lost an original today. RIP Gene Winfield. (Check out some of the builds he was responsible for.)

This car, as it’s being sold will not pass California emissions so it can’t be registered in state. It’s hard to see someone paying close to the asking price, having it shipped, then put the puzzle back together.

I’d b in at $ 8,500. But more photos needed. Under hood, rear, chassis, etc.

“The seller has repainted the trunk and undercarriage…” to conceal the rust issues… (really, why else would that be on your priority list with all this car’s other needs?)
