NFL Transport Truck? 1985 Dodge Ramcharger

This 1985 Dodge Ramcharger is a rare two wheel drive model that the seller speculates was formerly used by the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars to transport players and personnel. That would be fascinating, as the Jaguars were founded in 1993, which would make driving an old Ramcharger to the airport to pick up players and coaches seem like a real downgrade from the limousines they were used to. Regardless of the history, a rear wheel drive Ramcharger is a rare find, and this example listed here on craigslist is said to run well with an asking price of $4,495.

I’ve always liked the two wheel drive versions of these and the K5 Blazer, if only because they look so damn cool sitting close to the ground on meaty tires. Sure, it sort of misses the point in terms of these square bodies being the best of both worlds between an off-road friendly rig and a comfortable daily driver, but there’s plenty of 4WD models to choose from at any given time if that’s your jam; far fewer of the rear wheel drive models seem to pop up for sale. This example looks even tougher with wider rubber and some tasty aftermarket wheels with some nice dish. The bodywork looks largely sound, with the exception of some surface rust on the lower body panels.

The interior is a mixed bag, as that door panel looks quite out of place. I always thought the panels coordinated to some extent with the rest of the color scheme, and the butterscotch trim doesn’t look right. The paint work may be non-original as well, as the firewall and inner fenders look to be white, and again, those areas and the entire engine bay usually match the exterior. So, it seems likely we have a lot of mismatch to sort out, or just live with if you’re not worried about having perfect cosmetics. The seller notes more than a few issues, including leaking radiator and power steering hoses, various electrical features not working, and leaks coming into the truck from the windshield and tops of the doors.

The 318 engine, automatic transmission, and rear differential are all confirmed as being original to the truck. So, you have that going for you as a good reason to push forward with sorting out the cosmetics. The seller doesn’t know much about the Ramcharger’s history, as he notes that while the battery and starter are fairly recent, he doesn’t know exactly when they were installed. The power steering leak is severe enough that it will occasionally slip into manual steering, and it sounds like despite the upsized tires being noted as an upgrade, they are mismatched and need replacement. Overall, the seller seems to have priced this project-grade Ramcharger fairly, even if it was only used by the Jacksonville Jaguar’s janitor.

    Yeah!
And I have a 1981 Chevette that me and Elvis would sneak out in to cruise for chicks and score luges…
And a 1974 Pinto wagon that me and Albert Einstein would drive to Pizza Hut on family nights.
    Nice truck?

My 2006 Honda Accord EXL was a legit “courtesy” car for Penskes 2006 Indy car team. I bought it as a demo July 2006 from Penske Honda/Indy and ran it to 260,000 miles before developing a nasty bottom end noise. The “Captain” probably never saw it or rode in it. It had a tendancy to pull to the left.

I was relieved to see that it has it’s matching-numbers drivetrain…that’s very important on these 318 trucks, you know.

Lol,the comments never cease to amaze me…there’s no comparison to 70s or 80s sub-compact tin can cars, these ramchargers were actually good trucks, and have really went up in value, unlike some of the old days rubbish that was mentioned that is barely seen anymore, because most went to the crusher where they belong.

have a very original 87. had an 86 when they were new. love them. the big problem is finding any parts for them. “cash for clunkers” took hundreds of them off the road. mine also is a 2WD. until recently they were looked down on. most were used for mudders. new generation is using them for daily drivers. yes, the prices are creeping up. always thought they were more solid than the broncos or blazers of their time.
