Nicely Preserved: 1989 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

The G-series of the Porsche 911 remains one of the more popular generations to buy, either as a project or a usable driver. In particular, enthusiasts like models like this with the smoother-shifting G50 manual gearbox. However, convertibles like this low mileage 1989 Porsche 911 Cabriolet here on eBay present potential buyers with the choice between structural rigidity or open air cruising, and bidders have taken it to $20,700 with the reserve unmet.

For me, even with the Turbo-look spoiler and deep-dish Fuchs wheels, the soft top just doesn’t have the same appeal as the Coupe (or even the Targa for that matter, but I know a lot of folks detest the removable roof panel option.) But if you like convertibles, this one in New Mexico is worth a look with just 36,590 miles from new.

The interior is quite tidy, even if it’s infamous for lacking in creature comforts. Enthusiasts love the Getrag G50 transmission, which uses a hydraulically-actuated clutch to make the shifting action much more pleasant than on earlier models. There are no cracks in the dash, the steering wheel remains stock, and the other surfaces present quite nicely.

Critics often say this generation of 911 was among the most reliable, along with being genuinely quick and easy to maintain in the comfort of your garage. The seller provides no information on the 911’s maintenance history, other than to note is is 100% original. With the low mileage and impressive cosmetics, the lack of info isn’t deterring bidders at the moment – but will it clear reserve?

I’ve seen people buy these and graft on a top from a totally ruined coupe. Seems like the Venn diagram of convertible lovers and 911 enthusiasts don’t really overlap.
