No Reserve: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro X44 Project

This ’69 Camaro has spent most of its life being parked. By 1981, it had covered just 58k miles and unfortunately, it wouldn’t see any additional miles after that. A severe storm tore through the Kansas farm where it was hiding, causing the garage it was stored in to collapse. The original owner dug it out of the rubble but decided the body damage was bad enough that the engine and drivetrain would be of better use in their truck. Ever since the car has been parked until the current seller purchased it about 5 months ago with plans of restoring it. Unfortunately, their situation has changed and they need to sell it. They are offering it here on eBay in Enid, Oklahoma with no reserve and a current bid of $7,375.

Restoring a ’69 SS optioned Camaro is pretty much a no brainer, but taking on a low option example is a bit more of a challenge to justify from a financial standpoint. This one isn’t an SS, but it is at least a V8 car, plus it was optioned with the Deluxe interior and floor-mounted shifter. It’s going to need a full restoration, with lots of needed bodywork. That being said, it’s a ’69 with the X44 trim code. For those of you that don’t know, the X44 identifier was used on none Z/28 and SS cars, as well as on the COPO Camaros. While it won’t ever be a Yenko car, this one would be a great car to build into a clone!

The interior is looking rough, but complete. The Deluxe interior included Comfortweave upholstery, deluxe panels, and woodgrain dash components. The seller has already removed the old carpet to reveal the floor panels. There are a few holes in the floors that will need to be repaired. You can buy new metal to repair any structural issues that this car might have, but thankfully, it appears that the worst of the rust is confined to a few spots in the floors.

This one is a big project, but it actually has a cool look to it as it sits. If you could install new glass without fixing the roof damage, it would definitely draw attention everywhere it goes. Of course, not everyone is into the beater look, so it will likely be treated to a full restoration. The fact that the 307 V8 and automatic transmission are gone is a bit of a bummer, but it gives the next owner some engine options. And I for one appreciate that the seller is offering it without a reserve, that way the market can determine this project’s value. So, if it were yours, would to leave it looking ratty and make it into a wicked driver? Or would you give it a complete restoration?

Lack of an engine and transmission is a bonus for me, as I’d swap in big-block and a 4-speed. Ditto the trashed interior; I could do a color change with no guilt. Yes, I’d turn it into an RS/SS clone…if I really wanted a ’69 Camaro project.

It was parked due to the engine missing, then he left a Bobcat in the car for a week..

The absence of the 307 is a plus for me too. Saves the trouble of junking it.

I bought a mildly wrecked 69 with the 307, white vinyl top, auto on the column, and bench seat back in ’86 for 500 bucks. Sold it. Yep, I was a dummy.

Almost $7500 for a roller!!! There is definitely body work needed and the driver door and front fender might have done damage to the door pillar!! It’s good the 307 is gone and it is a blank canvas!! I would put a modern LS and go with the Tremec street/strip 5 speed!!!

This 69 is very much like my Camaro I bought 16 years ago for 4,200$. My also came with a 307 and manual 3 speed on the floor, my body was better. The 307 ran smooth but smoked and I just could not get into rebuilding a 307 so away it went along with the 3 speed. I their place a 4 bolt 350 and a muncie 4 speed. I had to redo the interior , this car has the deluxe int. which I wish mine had. When I got ready to paint, even though my body was ok it had all the little dings and dents that a driver of it’s would I decided to replace the sheet metal with aftermarket pieces, I would never have gotten the org. metal straight. My point is that I did all the work my self and have a really nice 69 driver and did it for under 15 grand which includes( I’m sure in today’s money 4,200$ would be right a 7,000$) the cost of the car. So the way I see it this little camaro works for me.
