No Reserve: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz has consistently produced gorgeous coupe models throughout time – there’s no denying that – but its larger coupe designs tend to be the most elegant. This 1970 280SE Coupe proves that point rather well, and it’s available here on eBay with no reserve.

This 2-door Mercedes-Benz is currently located in Edmonds, Washington, where it is also registered with a clean title. The advertisement mentions that this was part of a larger collection, and it certainly shows that the seller cared for this Benz.

In 1997, the coupe received a partial restoration, which consisted of new front seats, a thorough paint job, and rubber seals throughout.

The seller notes that they periodically drove this Benz after it came out of storage, and it is a solid, driving vehicle with no mechanical issues. All of its power doors, locks, and other gauges are also in working order – even the original Becker Grand Prix radio works.

There are slight bits of rust forming on the front passenger side wheel well and undercarriage of the vehicle, as well as under the door handle. Frankly, the spot under the door handle invokes some concern, but the overall condition of this Benz seems to be fine.

Of course, the chrome bumpers and other shiny bits on the exterior are in tip-top shape, accentuating the extravagant nature of this big coupe.

Currently, bidding for this 280SE is a smidge over $10,000, and that price will surely climb as the auction proceeds. While this coupe does have some imperfections, it is mechanically sound and ready to driven. What do you think of this 2-door Benz?

Love this car but my pockets are not deep enough to maintain it. Best of luck to the new owner.

I feel the same way, Bob. I think they are very handsome cars.

    Greetings All,

Unfortunately, I wasn’t a 300SE with the air bag suspension.

The thing that worries me here, that while it looks pretty good, the panel gaps worry me there might be more than meets the eye for corrosion.

These model cars, due to the two-ply floor construction often have hidden – and expensive – rust. Buyer beware.

These are wonderful cars and this late low-grill version is among the most desirable versions, but this one has clearly been hit (looking at the gaps) and has several pretty major rust issues. These were hand built. Intact examples have some of the best gap spacing of any car. For the current bid price, you are into early W113 SL territory in similar condition. Pagodas are, of course, a different car, but they are more fun, instantly recognizable and will probably have a higher value down the road. Unfortunately, every panel on these W111 cars (and W113 Pagodas) is welded and something as simple as replacing a fender requires removing the windshield and dash to do correctly. I personally LOVE the W111 convertibles, but they require very, very deep pockets to purchase or restore. Funny thing about these old Mercerdes. I’ve inspected literally dozens of W111s and W113s prior to purchase. Out of about 20 sub-$70k cars, only 2 were anything close to what the sellers advertised. It is the reason I no longer purchase and restore them.
