No Reserve: 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

With four days remaining in the auction, this 1974 Camaro Z28 is listed for sale here on eBay and is currently bid to $6,700. This was the last year for the Z28 option while Chevrolet took a hiatus from performance offerings in 1975 and 1976. The Z28 returned in 1977 after Chevrolet saw how popular the Pontiac Trans Am was with the public. This car is located in Great Falls, Montana.

The odometer indicates that mileage on this Z28 to be just over 80,000 miles. The car was originally equipped with a 350 cubic inch V8 engine. The stock engine was rated at 245 horsepower (net) from the factory. Headers and chrome valve covers look to have been added to improve performance. The seller believes the rear gears at 3.73 to 1. The car appears to have traction bars mounted on the rear axle.

The interior is dirty but looks to be in good condition. There are aftermarket gauges added under the dash and a funky homemade console resides between the seals. The seller states that this car has been sitting since 2006 when it was moved from Florida to Montana. At that time, a new fuel tank, belts and exhaust were installed. The seller has put about 500 miles on it in the last 14 years. The mandatory aluminum bumpers added to the 1974 Camaro added 7 inches to the length of the car.

Almost 14,000 Z28’s were built in the 1974 out of 150,000 Camaros. The increase in sales of the Z28 may have been because the Mustang was neutered to a 4 cylinder commuter car and Chrysler discontinued the Barracuda and Challenger. However, Pontiac was still producing Super Duty 455 Trans Ams and the AMX Javelin was still available.

The valve covers look correct for a 1974 Z28.

I’m pretty sure the hood is from a Z28 too

Looking at the satellite images it appears to be a Z28.

I’m digging the hood graphic. If I remember correctly, the Z28 in the dealer brochures always had that graphic on the hood.

I remember that brochure. I think it was a gold car

You are right, it was gold.

I know I’m in the minority on this one. ’74 is my favorite z/28 year. It also happens to be my favorite GTO year. I do draw a hard line with the Mustang II however. When I was a kid, this is what Detroit was making. What can I say? They grow on ya!

It’s my favorite too. I’ve never been a fan of 1st gen F body cars but I’m a HUGE fan of the 2nd gen. I actually own a 1974 Z28. The original drivetrain was long gone when I bought it back in the early 1990s but I was, and still am ok with that. I bought a rust free roller that was otherwise complete for $400. It now has a 408 small block, Doug Nash (Richmond these days) 5 speed, along with a Ford 9″ rear end. I like the 1974 model best because it’s the last year for the small rear window and the first year for the big bumpers. That combination just does something for me. My car doesn’t have the hood/deck graphics but I don’t really care for them anyway.

Hood and graphics are correct. Although one could be ordered without the graphics.

There was only one hood offered on the 1974 Camaro. All Camaros had the same hood. It did not matter if you had a 250 cubic inch 6 cylinder or a 350 cubic inch 8 cylinder. The finned valve covers are exclusive to the Z28. They were also installed on the L82 Corvette.

These were actually very nice driving cars in the day. I had a friend with the same car, color wise, but was an LT? It was loaded, except for the lowly 250 straight six! Three speed automatic, that required you to turn off the AC when climbing the highway mountain passes, in order to maintain the 65 mph speed limits! In other words fairly slow! My 34 hp 59 Karman Ghia gave it a run! Only to loose as we both reached 70, when I had to shift into 4th!

After looking at the auction it’s looking a little squirrelly.. No VIN listed, car is in Canada but says it’s in Montana… dash is green, seats and carpet are black? Looks pretty rough for having to deal with inconsistent facts about where the car is and if it can be seen. Byeee.

I would be highly surprised if you could even notice any performance improvement by adding headers to this engine in stock form.

Headers alone? Possibly not, but removal of the restrictive Y pipe, add a couple matched performance cats and true dual exhaust with an X pipe will make a difference! But what’s really needed is more compression and longer camshaft.
