When thinking of “hot hatch” models from the late 1980s and early 1990s, few overlook Volkswagen’s GTI models. These sporty compact vehicles offer distinct styling and nimble handling, which of course means that there aren’t too many decent examples left. However, this 1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI that’s available here on eBay blurs the line between driver and survivor, making it a tempting choice for anyone seeking a MK2 GTI.
This GTI is available in Farmingville, New York with a clean title. Surprisingly, despite its location, the seller claims that it is a rust-free vehicle, and that it is a solid example overall. The exterior is very clean and only has minor imperfections, such as some fading on the body trim. Though it features round euro headlights, the seller includes various exterior parts with the vehicle’s sale, such as an extra set of rectangle headlights, the corresponding grille for them, and smoked euro taillights.
Some interior features are missing, such as the radio, but do you really need such a thing in a hot hatch like this? On a positive note, the carpeting and seats are both clean and free of blemishes.
Under the hood, you’ll find a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, which pairs to a 5-speed manual transmission to drive the front wheels. Despite having 159,900 miles on the drivetrain, the seller mentions that it runs and drives well, and it also benefits from adjustable coilover suspension.

The only thing that I would change on this car would be That Hideous steering wheel! Also, I have a love-hate relationship with these old Volkswagens,I love the body styles and the interior’s but hate the engineering and the maintenance part as I seem to always get one that’s a non-runner and never can get it running again so it sits in the driveway for about 2 years and then I sell it as is, LOL this is a beautiful car and came from an era when hot hatches were truly cool! I would be proud to own it.
One of the most fun to drive cars I have owned. Had several 8v and 16v versions. Super reliable and can surprise waaay more expensive cars on a racetrack too!
You have to stop posting these 8V Gti. Okay, don’t really stop — they’re fine — but people who weren’t around for these cars need to know that the 8V version of the GTi was only a trim package. There was no performance added to a stock, basic Golf. They added wheels (not these, they’re Corrado G60), stripes all over the place, a nicer dash, cool lighting (ok, arguably a mild performance upgrade) but the engine and brakes got nothing. So it’s a trim package. There. I said it. And I’m already apologizing.
