No Reserve K5: 1989 Chevrolet Blazer

It’s nice to see an honest truck every now and again, one that isn’t perfect but still presents well. This 1989 Chevrolet K5 Blazer has been mildly restored with a driver-quality paint job but it looks good from where we’re sitting. The 1989 Blazer represented a few notable changes, with the most obvious on being the dual stacked headlights, which reflected the updated front end on the pickup truck models that year. The seller has listed this K5 Blazer here on eBay with the added appeal of being a no reserve auction, which means someone’s going home with one of the hottest trucks in the vintage 4×4 market.

The 1980s were the peak of GM’s obsession over 2-tone paint jobs, but solely among the truck lineup. The Blazer and its pickup lineup consistently utilized this multi-colored paint scheme, and while it wouldn’t fly today, it looks perfect on a rig like this. Given this Blazer was repainted, it’s encouraging to see that the owner stuck with the factory look as opposed to putting yet another restomodded Blazer on the market (we don’t need any more of those.) The steel wheels with their beefy dish, white-letter radials, and chrome bumpers complete the factory look.

In addition to 1989 being the year of stacked headlights, it was also when GM started utilizing galvanized steel for numerous body panels. This, coupled with an extended warranty on corrosion protection, signaled that the company was confident its new processes would keep bodies intact against winter roads. Given the clean condition of this Blazer, it seemed to have worked! The interior was also re-done as part of the modest restoration it enjoyed, with fresh upholstery on the seats, carpet, and headliner, and the listing indicates the dashboard was also refurbished or replaced.

The beefy 5.7L V8 kicks out 210 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. Throttle body fuel injection came standard at this point, and while a 4-speed manual was also standard equipment, this one comes with the optional 4-speed automatic. The ’89 also introduced auto-locking hubs, which likely seemed a major upgrade at the time, but many 4×4 enthusiasts prefer manual locking hubs, and this Blazer has the latter. The seller claims over $15,000 has been spent on its rejuvenation, and receipts back up the investment – making this no-reserve off-road rig even more compelling at its current bid price.

That is a good looking truck. I had an 87 model, it had the automatic locking hubs too. Enjoyed that truck a lot, shame the tin worm got ahold of it.

This is one very nice Blazer. I had an ’86 Half ton 305 4 speed ( Creeper gear) in this same color combination. It was one of my favorite trucks. They did a great job on the interior too. Very nice.
