No Road Tax! 1975 Enfield 8000

1975 Enfield 8000

What a cute little garage find! It hardly takes up any space and since it’s electric, it’s tax exempt! Listed here on eBay UK is this 1975 Enfield 8000 with 9 bids at the time of writing and a high bid of £343. The Enfield 8000 was the first all electric car produced in the UK (they were made on the Isle of Wight). It is reported that approximately 100 units were built. The top speed was about 40 mph with a range of just 30 miles.

This is a project that needs a complete refurbishment.  The motor is present and possibly all the electrical components are intact. The car has an aluminum body, which has some dents and dings and the bumpers have rusted away.

The owner says the that boot (trunk), bonnet (hood) and floors are rusted through (where the batteries were). There are no images of these areas provided. Also, the windscreen has a crack in it and finding a replacement could be a problem.

The steering and suspension are from a Hillman Imp and the headlamps are from an Austin Allegro, so hopefully all the parts can be found. The chassis has rust, but the owner says it looks reasonably solid, again no images provided.

As far as spares go, it is reported that a garage owner on the Isle of Wight purchased all the spares when the factory closed, so someone does have a large percentage of the NOS parts available. We don’t have their contact information, but hopefully someone here can point us in the right direction. The tires are said to hold air and since there are no longer batteries in the car it is easy to roll onto the trailer. So would you power this back up with batteries or would you figure out how to fit it with a combustion engine and a fuel cell?

Motor-on,
Robert
