North Pole Finds: Vintage Horse Drawn Sleighs

One Horse Open Sleigh

Christmas may be over, but winter lingers on. So, I figured it was still appropriate to feature a couple of old sleighs that Jim S sent in. I’ve always dreamed of taking one of these out on the snow covered hills close near my childhood home. I’ve never been able to fulfill that fantasy, but I came close a few years back. There was a sleigh similar to this one parked along the road with a for sale sign taped to it. That poor old people hauler sat there for months and I seriously considered buying it. Without a horse to pull it, I passed and have regretted it ever since. Well, this could have been my second chance if it weren’t for the fact that it’s on the other side of the country. It’s located in Denver, Pennsylvania and is listed here on eBay for $985.

Buffalo Carriage Company Sleigh

This second one has a similar look, but has sat in a barn for the last 10 years! It was built by the Buffalo Carriage Company and even though the seller claims it was appraised at $1,100, they are only asking $850 here on eBay. This one is also out East, so I wont be ridding around in it any time soon either. As long as the wood isn’t too bad on these, I can’t imagine that they would be too hard to clean up and make “snow” worthy. The hardest part may be convincing someone to let you use their horse for a day. If any of you have ever gone for a ride in a “one horse open sleigh”, please let us know!

Finally, a vehicle with a better ride quality than my beloved 1999 SAAB Viggen. And, you can use it in winter.

I miss that car, never should have sold it.

    After Christmas Special???

On a side note anyone else getting follow up emails on posts that just has the link to the post no comment in the email. It’s just started happening to me and it’s frustrating have to go back to the original post every time I get a new comment to a post I’m following. Especially the one on the expensive firewall that had 50 comments or better. Just wondering if it’s just my PC which is brand new.

      On my pad too………it sucks

Same here on my PC. And the comments are days old also.

We are testing some new things with the comment notifications. We have had a lot of people replying to them through email so we are trying to figure out how to send those people to the site instead. If you guys have any ideas, we’d appreciate it. Thanks.

I am sure you would like to get your numbers up so you make more ad revenue but this is not the way to do it. You have to reread All the posts just to figure out what the new one is…….at some point it becomes too much hassle……it relegates the notifications to spam. I would promote the site on other auto related sites and work on increasing your standing on the search engines.

We were just making a few adjustments Dave so a couple of the notifications came through without all the content. I think if you look at the most recent ones though you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Please let me know what you think.

This looks good……..have you looked at selling ads to subscribers? Not the silly auction thing the other site is doing, but regular ads for goods and services in the sidebar? Maby a classified section to sell cars and parts? I would spend a few thousand a year with you…….

We had better get something together then Dave! Maybe you could give us some ideas of what you would like to see in a classifieds system.

Does that thing have a Hemi?

These are so cool! Love the second one with the ornate step to get in and out of it.

I like the Samba model but you have an advantage, you push multiple emails to your subscribers every day……..with Samba, you have to go to them. I would crunch the numbers and have a small charge for line ads and another section for busisness card type ads for service and parts suppliers…..all searchable and catagorized. Did you know in the old days of conventional newspapers, there biggest revenue came from line classifieds? That is why craigslist hurt them so much……take a look at the trade a plane, Rock and dirt and boats and harbors newspapers of today…..lthey are very successful even in today’s electronic media world. Of course they are in both worlds.

If it had a metal plate from Studebaker (or another known manufacturer) they’d get alot more interest!

There is an Amish Group out the other side of Carrolton, Missouri, and I have seen them using sleds like this, plus the bigger ones. I think they are a thing of beauty. The bad part about wanting to borrow your neighbor horse, is the fact that if the horse is not trained to pull a wagon or sled, you will have your hands full, because by nature and horse does not like anything behind them, they can get real nervous and can kick, and they can hurt you bad. I have seen them also pulled by Missouri Mules a few times.

These are called “cutters”. They’re the classic “one horse open sleigh” of Jingle Bells fame. They’re not terribly uncommon. I just wish I had the space for one and someone to rent me a horse and show me how to drive it. Sure would be fun (if it ever gets around to snowing this winter, too).
