One Family Owned: 1991 Ford Bronco XLT

There is something about the appearance of the 4th Generation Ford Bronco that makes them very appealing. This impression is increased enormously when the vehicle in question has a history like this one. This is an original survivor that has remained part of the same family since new. Add in the fact that it has a documented 77,000 miles on the clock, and this is a classic that has plenty to commend it. The time has come for the Bronco to head to a new home, so it has been listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in Canyon Creek, Montana, and with the bidding now sitting at $9,400, the reserve has been met.

The owner refers to the Bronco as being a cream puff. I think that description is unkind, but it does appear to be a vehicle that has been treated with care and respect. The Emerald Green Metallic and Colonial White paint shine wonderfully, and if it weren’t for the owner’s openness, you would think it is perfect. However, he does point out that there are a couple of small spots on the top of the fenders where the clear-coat is peeling away. Since this doesn’t show in the supplied photos, I’m happy to take his word for it. The rest of the paint shows no issues, with only some minor stone-chipping on the lower paint surface, which is all part of normal wear-and-tear. The seller notes a small dent behind the spare wheel carrier, but there are no issues with any of the remaining panels. The photos show a rust-free classic, with the floors and frame in incredibly good condition. There is some evidence that the vehicle has ventured off-road, but I suspect this hasn’t happened very often. The trim, chrome, and glass all appear to be flawless.

The owner of this Bronco ticked a lot of great boxes when they ordered this vehicle. One of the best was to opt for the largest and most powerful engine available in the Bronco range at that time. What we find under the hood is a 5.8-liter V8 engine, producing 210hp. Backing this is a 4-speed automatic transmission, while a dual-range transfer case allows the Bronco to switch between 2 and 4-wheel-drive. The horsepower figure is quite impressive, but if you couple the 4WD capabilities with an engine that pumps out 315 ft/lbs of torque, this is a classic that can get into some pretty rugged and remote locations. The Bronco is fitted with a tow hitch and the factory Towing Pack, which means that this combination would make it the perfect vehicle for towing a boat or a camper trailer. From a mechanical perspective, it seems to be nothing but good news with this Ford. The owner says that the Bronco runs and drives well, with no smoke, strange noises, or issues of any sort. The engine is original, but an early fault saw the transmission replaced under warranty. The owner holds all of the documentation that confirms this. He also holds documentation for a complete service history, verifying that the Bronco has covered a genuine 77,000 miles. Also included is the original Window Sticker, along with a Marti Report.

Finding a vehicle of this type and age with an interior that looks this good is a bit of a treat. The sorts of locations that Broncos find themselves in at times means that all matter of mud and gunk can find its way into and onto carpet and upholstery. This has probably been the case here, but it has survived remarkably well. The carpet does show some stains, but I’d be inclined to have it professionally cleaned to see if the worst of these could be removed. The front seats’ outer edges show some wear, but the rest of the upholstery and plastic is spotless. If you’re going belting through the undergrowth, there is no reason for you to do it tough. That’s where this vehicle comes into its own. Slip behind the wheel and find yourself living in a world where you have air conditioning, power windows, power locks, cruise, a tilt wheel, and an AM/FM radio/cassette player.

It is hard to find a lot to be critical of with this 1991 Bronco XLT. This is the sort of vehicle that would appeal to someone who would love to own a new SUV but whose budget doesn’t stretch that far. This one isn’t perfect, but the photos tend to reinforce the fact that it hasn’t lived a hard life. The owner says that it grabs plenty of attention and comments wherever it goes. I find that quite easy to believe. What I find hard to believe is that the reserve has been met at the current price. That opens the possibility for someone to land themselves a lot of classic SUV for relatively little cash. Could that someone be you?

that year they didn’t have clearcoat, so I’m not sure what the seller is referring to in that comment.

Dad bought new a 1988 full-size Bronco (Custom trim) with a front bench seat, vinyl floors, the 5.0L V8, and three speed auto. It was a reliable family hauler, workhorse, and hauled trailerload of materials for our home remodel and cabin in the woods. We even took the top off for a few summers.

One weak point: despite being garaged 95%+ of its life, the lower tailgate started to rust when we sold it in 2005.

Dan B the seller calls out a small rust spot on the lower tailgate here as well. Still a fantastic looking rig. Love to own it.

its a nice solid example. .however not sure what the bidders are thinking. $15,000? I’d say its a nice $8,000 to $10,000 example with all its faults.. original but far from perfect or extra clean
