One-Owner! 1970 Plymouth Fury Suburban

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s amazing to find a car from 20 years ago that’s only had one owner, let alone one that’s 53 years old. That’s reportedly the case with this 1970 Plymouth Fury Custom Suburban. With one of the coolest and most menacing grilles of all time (at least in my opinion), this very long long roof can be found listed here on eBay in Henderson, Nevada and the seller has an opening bid price of $8,950 listed.

A lot of people would prefer the Fury Sport Suburban for its covered headlights and other fancy features, but I like the eyes-wide-open shark-eyes grille of the base Suburban or Custom Suburban. Plymouth offered a Suburban wagon (is that redundant?) beginning back in the 1949 model year and those are incredibly cool cars. A big, round two-door Plymouth wagon? Yes, please.

This example is said to have had just one owner since new and that’s pretty incredible. It’s almost like hearing of someone retiring after being at the same job for decades. People don’t seem to have the patience that they used to, staying at the same job for 20-30-40 years, and keeping vehicles for just as long. Folks today seem to switch vehicles every few years and switch jobs even more frequently than that, every year or two sometimes. The sweet tailgate on this Custom Suburban opens down like a tailgate or swings to the side.

The seller is very cryptic about showing the seat bottoms at all, so they must be burnt to a crisp or in tatters. Hey, we have to assume that if something isn’t being shown, right? It’s just human nature. I can’t imagine they’re that bad, and even if they are, seat fabric may be available or some that’s very close to the original color and pattern. Just show us the seats! The rear seat back looks great in this photo. The cargo area looks good, with what looks like a solid five decades of wear and tear but hopefully, it can be brought back to life again.

The base engine is in this Suburban, a 318-cu.-in. OHV V8. It would have had 230 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when new. A monster 350-hp 440 V8 was optional. A show of hands for those who wish this was the 440? Me, too. The seller says that it’s “running and driving”, which is never a glowing endorsement, but it’s better than not running and driving. This one has had a “service” and new engine mounts and it looks like a fun project wagon. Any thoughts on this Fury wagon?

I like the faux Road Runner hood humps and yes that grill is pretty cool. Could prob get that ol 318 running good in short order and would be a fun flea market ride (I go to a lot of flea markets lol)..price might be a lil high and I bet 5k in cash might do it..GLWTA

What Road Runner ever had hood bulges (or scoops) that looked like that?

Wow, I don’t believe I ever processed one of these this stripped down. No air, manual brakes in the usual green. 9,500.00 atleast twice what was paid for it. Not a bad return on their money.

Could that be the original owner in the background?

What’s better than a fuselage Fury? Maybe this wagon. I always liked the look of these among all wagons. One owner would have to have really liked this car. Peering under the hood leaves me asking why I don’t see power steering? You have to seriously hustle this thing around the parking lot. Keep the tire pressure up.

If it had power steering that little 318 wouldn’t climb a hill pulling that 2 1/2 ton boat with any drag on that engine at all, probably why it don’t have air either! Once the grade hits 12% upward I’ll bet you can hear it saying “I think I can, I think I can” without anyone or anything in it! At the very least it should have a 360 or 383 if you want a functional family wagon that will actually move with all the kids & gear for a vacation, and the 440 if you’re going to tow a boat or travel trailer with it! Once the wife starts overheating and becomes less than happy because there’s no a/c the kids will soon follow! Anyway, how much does he want for this $3000 worth of under powered (useless as a family vehicle) car lol?

It would be fun to book an appointment at your local Chevrolet dealership, to change the oil on your Suburban. Watch them all scratch their heads when you pull up in this!

That front end light configuration brings back memories (not all good) seeing coming on in our rear view mirror… 🚔

Bought the car version of this in about 1978, it was red and needed a trans, got it for $75 and put a trans in. Had about $100 or so in it and it looked that good with same type hood. Was great running transportation for me.

Yeah you are absolutely right in this one Scotty – and not only the grill – for me this is one of the finest wagons of all – would love to have it!

Almost bought a Dodge Monaco Wagon just like this, when I was on a roadtrip trough New Zealand some years ago – owner wanted four or five grand (NZ-Dollar) for it – but would have been a pain to ship it back home to switzerland.

Keep up the good work amd a grand new year!

If you see a Mopar “fuselage” wagon with a rear door visible hinge (1969-71) you have to lower the glass before opening the tailgate. The release handle for the gate is inside.
The 72-73 wagons have hidden hinges (except Plymouth …) and it is no longer essential to lower the window, you can open it from the outside with the glass raised.
But you always have to lower the window if you want to open like a tailgate

Pics with and without trailer hitch & receiver… interesting. Or, it’s my eyes. I like Henderson. Also like this wagon… for less, of course.
Always liked those hood bulges, but with the 383 callouts on their side.

My folks bought a new 1969-70 Custom Suburban Plymouth, green just like this. It too was a 318, but with P/S and P/S. My older brother hit a utility pole and crumpled the RF fender. It was repaired, and we drove it from NY to CA in 1977. Dad then gifted it to me. It had a sticky valve, and I had another vehicle, so I sold it for $500.
